The male bowerbird is extensively known for their complex mating ritual in which they build large, elaborate nests, decorated with various objects of color in order to attract a mate. However, what does the bird truly seek? Is it an intricate home? Or is it the value of companionship?
I tend to find my answers in absolutes. After all, years of experience taught me that life is nothing more than a series of flowchart decisions, so it was simple common sense that with our limited time, we seek that which brings us the most comfort and lavishness. Of course, that would mean that the answer lies within the bird's materialistic value.
Those lofty stories where the protagonist gives up everything for the sake of 'love'...I couldn't understand them. What use was there in something like that? Such irrationalities of the heart served to be counterproductive as a whole.
With one decisive press of a key, I finally finished the email. That was the last of them. I believed that I could still continue working, but a particular growl in my stomach told me otherwise. Perhaps I would grab a simple bite to eat and then continue at home.
From my office, I heard the lively night life of Seoul, bustling with people as they walked and the hurried hums of cars racing by. It was a reminder that it was long past closing, yet I alone remained in the building.
It was just a little bit of overtime.
With a sigh, I brought my attention back to the large monitor on my desk. I moved the mouse, ready to shut off the computer, when a small notification popped up at the corner of my eye. An unstoppable curiosity spurred me to click on it, especially after seeing the attached name, taking me to an old social media platform I hadn't even visited in ages.
The post was by a person named Min Do-hun and accompanying it was just one photo, captioned 'Happiness'.
It was of a man, immaculately dressed and groomed in a fine suit, embracing a woman in an elaborately decorated white dress which flowed down to the floor and then some.
"Min Do-hun...I used to go to high school with him," I reminisced to myself. I wouldn't say that we were the closest of friends, but we knew each other well enough to consider the other a little more than a mere acquaintance. "So he finally got married."
My eyes lingered on the picture for a few more seconds before I resumed my earlier action of shutting off my computer. Within seconds, the monitor flashed to black, reflecting back my lonesome visage. Well, I wasn't particularly disheartened by it. He found love, so good for him. I tried my hand at it a couple times and found the whole farce to be rather disappointing.
I pushed myself from the sleek, varnished surface of my desk, gathering together my belongings.
Hmm, seeing Min Do-hun after all this time had me feeling a little nostalgic. If I recalled, there was a night market in Myeongdong that we used to frequent back when we were students. It wouldn't hurt to revisit those memories and take a walk around that area.
As I slung a coat over my shoulders, I flicked the lights off in the office, closing the door and locking it with keys whose jingles echoed down the empty halls. During the day, the building would be filled with hurried managers, interns, and employees as they rushed to perform their designated work tasks. However, late at night when everyone has already clocked out and gone home, it was completely devoid of any human activity.
It took me a few days before I grew accustomed to the stark difference when I first took up this office. Now, I couldn't help but find these quiet nights a little peaceful.
The reverberating footsteps of my shoes against the polished floor sang in staggered harmonies as I made my way towards the elevator. I entered the lonely chamber of the elevator, pressing the ground floor and watching as the hefty double doors closed before me.
