During the days of interactions, I would walk myself to the agency after school every day, instead of having Dazai to pick me up. However, today's different.
I typed a message on the phone, directing it to Dazai:
I won't be going to the agency today since I need to stay at the library to study for the test tomorrow. I'll make up the absenc next week.
- Chika
As I pressed send, I closed the phone, and collapsed on the chair, letting myself have a moment of relief. This is just traumatizing. After a few minutes, I got up again, and headed for the library.
---
"The library's going to be closed within 10 minutes, please take your belongings and leave." The school library broadcasted out, followed by a chime from the grandfather clock placed at the corner between the most untouched shelves. Time surely flies by when you spend time at the library, it's already 6.
I stretched my arms and legs out and rolled my neck due to the long-term sitting position. I was about to pack my textbooks, when I felt the presence of an intimate person, and a familiar touch placed on my shoulder. My heart started racing, this was the last person I wanted to see. Even without turning my head around, I could feel the cold, dead eyes piercing into my soul, the hatred and malice were off the charts, I felt like I could fall unconscious at any second. (Exaggerated)
Dazai was standing there when I turned my head, his face surprised me, it wasn't as bad as what I thought, it was just the tension he's giving off that rushed through me. Without notice, his mouth started moving, shaping the words out.
"Why didn't you show up? I thought we made a deal about attending work?" Dazai interrogated and gripped harder.
I looked puzzled, and questioned back, "didn't I sent you a message? That I won't be able to attend?"
The man raised an eyebrow, letting go of the grip and arms akimbo, "no need to make such a stupid excuse Chika, you sent nothing."
I felt irritated, and grabbed my phone out, searching for the sent message, however, there was nothing. It must haven't been sent since I closed the phone too quick...AHHHH, what was I thinking? I looked away from the gaze of Dazai, lowering my head a little, how should I even explain this? Not like it's even half convincing...
He then sighed and crossed his arms together before saying "I'll let you go for this time, but you'll need to make up the absence next week. Understand?"
I relaxed in relief, and nodded frantically in response, but isn't this just too easy? I need to keep my caution up...what if he notices something?
"Anyways, I've finished the job, let's just go back now..." Dazai said with a disappointed look.
The walk back was dead silent, though the tension had fallen to quite a nadir. Dazai walked in front and opened the door when we reached home. The sky had fallen dark already, it's always like this in winter, cold and unilluminated.
As soon as I got back, I left my bag unwatched on the couch purposely, and headed for the bathroom after taking a change of clothes. I acted as normal as I could and collapsed as soon as I closed the door from behind. The beats of my heart were increasing every second, and the fluttery nervous stomach feeling never faded a bit until now. I took the gun out from behind my back and placed it on the counter as I stood up. I looked into the mirror, to only see a pale face staring back, a face that represented a perfect nihilist.
I took my uniform off, and stepped into the shower, letting the water pour over my body. When I finished, I changed into the prepared clothes, it was easy and comfortable to move in. Before all, I tugged the gun behind my back to my pants again, and leaned against the door, listening to the movements of this resident. It was hell dead silent. He must have seen the letter in the bag already, he's probably waiting for me outside, just like what I expected.
I turned the door knock and walked out towards the living room. Dazai was sitting there on the couch, with his legs crossed and arms relaxed aside. My vision went down onto the table, where the letter was placed.
Dazai was sentimental, but asked in a mocking tone, "so, you've been here for a few days already...have you decided to take action yet? Or did you find something interesting...to report back to that organization of yours."
I took the gun out, reassuring that the safety lock was on, and pointed it towards him, "I have indeed, and I'm going to complete it now..."
He chuckled, and smirked, leaning closer until his forehead touched the gun, "oh drop the act Chika. You would've killed me already if you really wanted to long ago, the safety lock is not even on, and you've put the letter in such a noticeable place. It's too obvious. Besides, how are you going to kill me without bullets?" He then took out 7 bullets, placing them on the table alongside the letter. The suffix 'chan' after my name was no longer added.
That was totally out of my expectancy, how did he even take out the bullets without my notice? Even though I had no intentions of killing him in the first place, the gun was still with me the whole time, I didn't even feel a thing. Such a creepy man...I sighed in resignment and placed the gun down onto the table too.
"The story's getting interesting here, what are your intentions? Tell me Chika." He inquired, and leaned back again, looking entertained.
"Looks like you really see through everything huh? Before I talk about anything, what if we make a deal first?"
"What is it?"
"I will act as a double agent for the agency and the organization. I give you all the information that you inquire, and you grantee me protection along with the payments while not letting the organization know. As you can see, my intensions are simple, I want the money."
"Sure thing! I don't see anything inconvenient about that." Dazai agreed...with a tint of happiness even? "But let me guess something Chika...the organization that you work in is the exact one that killed your family...and you're grateful for it, aren't you?"
My eyes widened in disbelief. I tried to talk, but nothing came out, and there was nothing to say.
"Oh Chika, you never fail to surprise me. What if you tell me the story of yours, be realistic." He smirked, looking deep into my eyes, waiting for a response.
I gulped and leaned back on the shelf before slumping down onto the floor with hands placed on my forehead. Memories flooded through my brain, arranging the order, shaping out the events, tearing the scars apart, when the time goes all the way back to four years ago...
