Chicks Before D!cks
My eyes had closed, but I hadn’t even noticed this at first. It was the arms wrapped around me, shielding me away from the rest of the world, that I almost didn’t want my eyes to open ever again. I could stay like this forever, in protection from everything around me, if it meant I was being held by someone I liked.
There was the gentle sound of the remaining glass falling from around us, as his arms tightened around me. I could feel his chest press against me as he took easy breaths, shifting. Then his breath was in my ear.
“I’m sorry,” he said softly, and my eyes opened.
In the front of my seat was the clothing, plastered in front of me as if it was taunting, but I ignored it, still holding on to the hands that clutched me tightly.
He shifted again.
“Don’t move,” he instructed, slowly releasing me. “I’ll be back in a second.”
He stepped out of the driver’s seat and I turned my head to see where he was going. I gasped as the back window was completely shattered, all the glass having fallen onto the back seat, and a few small, sharp pieces beside me in the front.
Christopher approached the red convertible behind us, where Katherine and all her friends gaped at what they had just done. He looked slow and nonchalant from the back, so I couldn’t be sure what his expression was like, but Katherine’s friend’s seemed to cower.
“I…I am so sorry!” I could hear Katherine shriek as she stared at the broken window. “I didn’t mean to –”
“Do you have any idea what could have happened?” Christopher questioned, making everyone stare at him in confusion.
Katherine shook her head, hands gripping onto the steering wheel for dear life. “I’ll pay for that. I swear I will. Do you want a new window? Or maybe a new car. A better one.”
“Forget the car!” Christopher’s voice shouted for the first time, and everyone cringed.
Katherine blinked. “I-I’m sorry! I’ll pay –”
“Don’t you get it?!” Christopher hollered, outraged. “I don’t give a damn about the car! What would you do if you had hurt Melody? How would you fix this if she had broken bones, or a concussion?” He demanded, making a few girls glance at me.
Katherine laughed nervously. “Is she hurt?” She asked now, a rather painful thing for her to say.
Christopher shook his head. “You better hope not,” he mumbled at last, now turning back to the car. I watched as he silently got back into the driver’s seat, slamming the door.
And he drove away. I stared as Katherine’s car slowly disappeared from far behind us, and the open back seat made the car’s engine even louder. I could hear every clatter of rubble under us, and the squeaking of tires and the smell of burning rubber as we turned this way and that, before he stopped the car.
I sat, feeling awkward, guilty, and troublesome. I continued staring out the back.
“Shouldn’t we do something about that?” I asked. “Shouldn’t be get someone to fix it? Or use your insurance?”
Christopher sighed, shaking his head. “Honestly, is money the only concern for everyone here?”
He turned to me now, examining me up and down that I flushed. He met my eyes again. “Are you hurt?”
I stared at him, shaking my head slowly. I hadn’t thought of it, but Christopher had protected me this whole time. He had shielded me away from the glass, questioned Katherine if I was hurt, and was asking if I was okay. He truly cared about me, more than most of the people here even did.
