True Cross Academy... It was strange. Akemi wasn’t exactly the type who did well in school. The young blonde was true, very smart, but it was the interaction with others that she struggled with day after day. It didn’t help that the withdrawn girl had a slightly... curvy appearance. Her chest was large and it wasn’t like she had that slim tummy where you could see her ribs when she sucked in just a little. So she wore the males’ uniform to hide her body. It didn’t do a very good job at making her chest smaller but it hid the rest of her insecurities.
Today was a particularly difficult day. In English they were pairing off! Akemi glanced around as the teacher announced their partner and she hoped to all things that it wasn’t Shima, Renzō. That kid had stared at her enough during the first week to make her never want to go near him again!
“Matsumoto, Akemi and Suguro, Ryūji.”
Her heart all but fell onto the ground. Him, really?! He was always glaring and he just intimidated her. Akemi stared down at her hands as she heard him moving over to sit next to her. The person who was sitting next to her before had been called before her so she went to sit with her partner. Ryūji sat down and she could hear him huff a little. It could have just been a sigh or him exhaling but it made her that much more nervous. Akemi stared down at her notebook with notes written, her pencil gripped tightly in her left hand.
“Now that you all are in pairs you’ll be coming up with ideas for your paper. Please have the topics ready and submit them by the end of class.”
As the teacher spoke Akemi took a deep breath to try and calm down. It was the first five minutes of class, so she would have to spend the rest of the time actually talking to Suguro. Whenever the teacher finished talking the room filled with a low buzz of many voices. Finally her green eyes darted up to look at the male who sat next to her. He had his notebook opened and his own pencil gripped in his right hand and a glare on his face as usual. But as she looked at him, his brown eyes met with hers. “Um...” Akemi blinked once. “... I... uh, um... do uh... you have any ideas?”
Ryūji shrugged his large shoulders while he tapped the end of his pencil against the desk. “Maybe we could write somethin’ ‘bout demons.” He muttered; he wasn’t serious about the suggestion because the girl wasn’t in the Cram School. What were the odds that she’d be interested in actual demons?
“What kind?” The blonde asked with a new found confidence. If there was one subject she was very educated in and interested in, was the satanic creatures. Her question made him look at her like she was insane. “Um, because there are different types... the kind that are practically harmless, the kind which can harm you but can’t do much more than scratch you, the kind that... um... wait, uh, you probably were just being sarcastic...” Akemi trailed off. Her face flushed with a pink colour and she looked down at her notebook. “H-how about... we write a paper on how customs have changed in the past fifty years regarding raising children?
“...” Ryūji stared at her but it was in shock more than anything. She knew about demons? He wanted to ask more about it but he had to pay attention at her suggested topic. “That’ll probably make us look less insane then writin’ ‘bout demons. Teach will be concerned ‘bout us if we go on writin’ ‘bout Coal Tar an’ shit.” He mused as a test; if she knew what they were then that’d be enough for him!
“Mhm,” Akemi let out a small laugh. “Coal Tar, Gehenna, Ghouls... we’ll end up being sent to see the councillor.” She flipped a page and wrote down the topic of what they were going to do the paper on and tore it from the notebook.
“Heh, yea’,” Ryūji nodded his head slightly.
And that was how the first week of school had gone. Ryūji and Akemi had begun hanging out with each other to do the paper, but after the paper had been submitted...
