Soft murmuring and laughter filled the classroom at Kocher High School as students huddled in small groups. They either cracked not-so-humourous jokes or bragged about the newest updates to their wardrobes.
Arisa brushed a strand of her hair behind her ear. Her eyes quickly scanned the textbook's words that stared right back at her. Now and then, she would flick her eyes up to see the commotion created by the huddled groups, then focus back on her reading. She picked up her pen and scribbled a quick note on the side of her notebook.
Read at home cause this shit makes no sense.
She put the pen down and looked up from her textbook. Sighing, she closed the book and roughly stashed it in her bag. Usually, she deciphers the meaning of those textbooks with ease however, due to the rapid interruption in lessons by the students running off to the lockers, the teachers gave up on teaching and stayed here just for the pay. At least that's what Arisa had concluded. At this rate, she might as well stop daydreaming of her perfect future.
Arisa lived with her father since her parents got divorced and moved countries. The family business had begun to drop in sales and it negatively impacted the Chirawit family.
Now Arisa's dream was to pass this school and get a high-valued job in the future. Then she would complete all her wishes that she dreamt of now.
The murmuring stopped, pulling Arisa out of her trance. Notification sounds on phones scattered across the classroom. People began checking and excitedly made their way towards the lockers. Before Arisa pulled her phone out, she knew exactly what 'hell' was about to break loose.
The Red Card Game had begun.
Arisa stood up and made her way towards the empty windows. Peering outside, she saw a poor guy racing towards the old stadium. He was rapidly getting kicked and pushed without mercy by his peers. Arisa thought of bringing out her phone and filming the crime in front of her. But this game had rules: no photos, no commotion in front of cameras - anything that happens needs to look like an accident. If proof was made, the person would be the next target.
Filming the scene would be Arisa walking right into the lion's den, but could she just stand and be a bystander while someone was nearly beaten to death?
Making up her mind, she sprinted down the stairs and headed towards the stadium. It was now or never. She could see the crowd slowly making their way in as she got closer. She slowed down to small steps to make herself seem part of the crowd and stood on the stairs with the others. The quiet murmuring of the stadium slowly turned into an uproar.
The F4 boys: Thyme, Ren, Kavin and M.J proudly walked in. Screams and shouts echoed through the stadium. People began commenting on their beauty and style. Some fainting by their presence.
Arisa's distaste for each of them grew as they came into her sight. Her eyes travelled to their leader: Thyme. She wanted to tear that smirk off his proud face and make him apologise to those he had hurt, to those he had made the world seem like hell.
Thyme took out his phone as three students held the poor guy by his hair, tugging whenever the guy tried to get free.
''Phupha of class 6/1,'' Thyme read, ''A top student. Never had any trouble'' He swiftly looked up his phone and faced the boy. That ridiculous smirk appeared once again. ''Too bad that has to change now because you planned to expose what happened at this school.''
Phupha glanced up at him. Anger and hate visible in his eyes.
''Honestly,'' Thyme continued, ''Do you think I'm an idiot?'' Arisa eyed the evidence. She could've had one of them on her phone if she had filmed the earlier scene. However, the files and videos began to disappear.
''So? This Red Card Game is wrong. No matter how hard you try to cover it up, you can't escape the truth.'' Phupha said. Arisa agreed with his words. She felt them empowering her to say something - anything - to not be seen as one of those bystanders.
Arisa clenched her clammy hands. Stepping forward she mentally prepared her speech. She parted her lips but no sounds came out as a hand shut it. Her eyes widened as she was pulled back by a pair of hands, and was pushed into a corner.
''What the hell do you think you were doing Arisa?!'' Gorya said in disbelief, ''I saw that look on your face that clearly stated 'I am going to bring hell onto myself,' so don't you deny it.''
Gorya stared at Arisa, her hair gradually falling in front of her eyes. She had been with Arisa since Arisa had joined this school. Although they seemed distant at first, they slowly connected dots and similarities between their lives; what people now would see as a close friendship. Gorya too attended this school to obtain that peaceful and happy future, but unlike Arisa, she wanted a quiet school life. She did not want to get involved with F4 or the Red Card Game whatsoever. Now, she made it her goal to get over with this school alongside her friend.
'Gorya, you know this isn't right. That guy is probably not gonna make it out alive if someone doesn't do something! My morals say I should do something at least.'' Arisa blew out a breath as she ran her hand through her hair. She knew the consequences she was about to face if she had done something. Maybe Gorya was right. Nothing can be done now, it's too late. Everyone probably left already.
''Arisa, we need to leave this school with a quiet life. All we need to do is focus on ourselves right now.''
''Fine,'' Arisa mumbled.
''Huh? Can't hear you.''
''FINE!''
They began laughing hysterically, almost forgetting the tension that had risen just a few moments ago. Their echo was the only sound in the empty corner of the stadium as they began to calm themselves.
A gentle breeze moved past them as they made their way to the lunch hall. Arisa's thoughts began to clear as she thought of her ultimate goal. The only thing that made her fight and stay. Other than Gorya of course. Her best friend and sister whom she never had.
