At 8 years old y/n met her grandfather on her mother's side for the first time. Her mother was extremely hesitant about the whole ordeal and almost changed her mind countless times ,but her husband kept nagging her about how "her father deserved to see his only grandaughter before he died".
You see, the main reason this whole 3 hour roadtrip to grandaddy was arranged was because he was dying of brain cancer. "Pretty typical for old men" , thought y/n , her true colors peeking through the facade of her cute appearance.
Y/n was a little different from her peers , sticking out like a sore thumb , especially in situations where she was forced to speak her mind . Forced, because every time she did , people looked at her with gazes cold and full of distrust. They couldn't handle her brutally honest answers and opinions ,so everyone kept her at a distance. That meant she had no friends and instead , bullies. However, she was a very imaginative child so she always found ways to keep herself entertained . She loved exploring the small forest near her house and had even set up a fort underneath a delapitaded bridge. She also loved butchering frogs and nailing them on trees along hiking paths, scaring people away from her safe place. Despite all that , she wasn't a bad person . She hated the fact that people disliked her and she felt nauseous every time she plunged her small hunting knife in the frogs' stomachs. However she knew she had to keep her walls high, so she gritted her teeth and kept straying further away from people .
Part of the reason she was excited about visiting her estranged grandpa was the fact that he lived in a small hut in the middle of a thick forest , as her mother described with a taste of nostalgia and fear in her voice. She was hyped to finally be able to explore some new grounds as well as get away from the suffocating air of her small hometown .
The family car came to an abrupt stop, making y/n wake up startled . She rubbed her eyes and groaned . It was so cold. She looked out the window and saw trees , trees as far as her eyes could reach. She excitedly barged out the car and opened the car's trunk to get out her small suitcase , while her parents yelled at her to not wander around without them. They all silently walked towards the hut, her mother in the front guiding them with a flashlight in hand (it had gotten quite dark) , the sickening sound of wet leaves being stepped on , echoing in her ears . When they finally reached the hut , y/n was surprised at how.... welcoming it looked . She expected something out of a horror film but was instead greeted by the sight of a homely looking small building ,sloppily painted a light brown color. She could see smoke coming out the chimney and could make out the figure of a man from inside the house. She heard heavy rushed footsteps and before her mom managed to even knock , an older tall and thin man swinged the door open . He looked ecstatic and immediately embraced y/n in a warm hug. Y/n immediately was taken aback by his scent. He smelled of wet dirt and fresh meat , something that gave off comfort to her . She trusted this man . As they all got sat around a small dining table and the chattering between the adults began , y/n inspected the man closely . He had thin white hair sparsely covering his skull , dark sunken eyes , a white untamed beard and a long crooked nose . His teeth were yellow and his clothes looked like they had seen better times . It also stunned her how frail he looked , because his hug was very firm . He is dying , she had to remind herself multiple times while she watched him happily blab away. Suddenly ,her parents got up, snapping her from her trance , said goodbye to her and promised to be back in a couple of weeks . And just like that, it was now her , her dying grandpa and the endless woods.
"I have a room prepared for you in the attic so go ahead and get comfortable little one" . She thought about telling him off for the stupid nickname he thought up for her , but she was too tired to bother . She would deal with the issue tomorrow. For now , all she wanted was to sleep . She went up a wooden ladder with the help of her grandpa and landed flat on her stomach in a small space . The attic. The ceiling was a bit taller than her , the bed was neatly made with a blue flowery duvet and baby pink wallpaper covered the walls. This must've been her mom's room . She fell on the bed with a thumb and let a sweet breeze from the ajar window lullaby her to sleep .
