When you think of Death what do you think of? Sadness? Someone who has passed on? Pain? Longing? I don't think of any of these things. I think of love... true love. The kind of love that makes the world spin and the sky cry. The kind of love that you only find once. Why think of this when I think of Death? Well, because Death is not a something, he is a someone who stole my heart at the beginning of time.
This is not your typical love story, no, this is the story of a love that could never be. A love that was destined to fail before it had begun. You see, there is a saying that you have most likely heard at some time: opposites attract. This saying got it's start from some where, from someone's story. It just so happens that that story is mine.
Death and I met before time began. There were no people, no animals, just the stars and moons in the universe. We were free to go anywhere and do anything. There was nothing to hold us to one place, or even one galaxy. We became close, so close that we almost stopped existing, but that was against the rules.
You would think that in a place where there was nothing, there would be no rules. However, that was not the case. Death and I were never meant to get close. We were never meant to fall in love, but how could we stop it? In all of the universes there was only us. In all of space there was no one else for us to be with. It was a lonely place and to ease that loneliness we broke the ultimate rule. We also payed the ultimate price, but to help you understand that, you must know who I am.
I am Life. I am the bringer of all beings, small and large, past and future. I am a part of all things. My love, Death, is the taker of lives. He is the end to all of my beginnings, past and future. Now, try to imagine what would happen if Life and Death would join in love and become one. There would be no new beginnings, no ends to what was old. Things would just keep ageing and nothing would change. The universe would have to balance itself out and create a new Life and a new Death. The struggle between loving each other and the love of what I create is one that shall never end.
The universe had sensed our growing love, and to keep the balance she created the planets. She populated it with beings and had me breathe life into them. She tasked me with all life on the planet, and him with all the death. The creatures grew to love me and my gifts, worshipping me and making me a Goddess. However, they feared my love, and shunned him in every way. His suffering showed itself in plagues and diseases, random storms that took the lives of many. He felt that if he would be feared, he would give them good reason to be afraid.
Afraid they were. They prayed for answers to the Goddess they had named and asked for things that could not be done. The most I could do was send Death small gifts of my own, ones marked just for him. He would keep these gifts and protect their souls in what we named the Afterlife. A place where both of our jobs could shine and parts of us could be together.
This my children is why you should not fear Death, he is merely a lover missing his one true love. This is why you should not worship life, for I am the same. Creating gifts out of love to ease his loneliness.
My name is Life and I am in love with Death. There is no changing it, no denying it. However, our love for you is what keeps us at bay. Our love for the beauty that is our creation, we will forever struggle, alone, and without each other.
