"Keep digging, John, keep digging!"
He paused and looked at Kelly as if trying to figure out where that commanding voice came from. He has been with Kelly all these past months and he never seem to believe that the voice came from the only woman he has been with. It was a different voice, more dark - more devious - more eerie.
The harsh rainfall - maybe. It was the harsh rainfall that somehow made her voice sounded devilish. He covered his eyes a bit as Kelly confusedly pointed the flashlight she was holding to him, "Why are you stopping? - Dig!"
He looked at her face, as if searching a lost sweet timid girl whom he spent the best night of his life the day before. When he tried looking at her - her eyes looked menacing like they were bulging out of their sockets - totally focused on the hole that he is digging.
BOOM! BRAAANG!
A sudden burst of lightning lit up the surroundings for a second and John felt a sudden fear - Did he just see his new girlfriend with a demonic smile on her face?
Its probably a mirage of some sort, he said to himself as he closed and rubbed his eyes using the back of his hand and try to make sure his eyes are not playing tricks on him. He tries as he must to adjust his sight to the darkness of this forsaken mountain whose only illumination is the faint flashlight which somehow made the surrounding forest darker. Worst of all the sound of the thudding blanket of mud which seemed to be jumping thicker as the rain continued to fall. He tried to squint his eyes and looked back at Kelly who is now sits nearer to the hole he is digging.
"I maybe getting paranoid because of the ambient sound of thunder and soft thudding of the mud-soaked earth around me," he said to himself. The awful rainfall also caused him to have a blurred image of the surroundings - the thick foliage which they went through just to get to this spot seemed to vanish as the lighting fades it temporary bursts of light.
He looked back and inched closer to her and looked again. "She doesn't looked beyond normal," he said to himself. "She was still that same girl with an odd worry look on her face. I am just imagining things." He looked down, now it seems that he just dug down 2-3 feet but that few minutes of rest plus seeing the worried look of her girlfriend, gave him an energy boost and he continued digging with more intent.
John missed one thing though- Kelly was worried for a reason. If he only noticed that she kept on looking back and around nervously in the dark surroundings.
Only if he looked a wee bit longer he'll realize that She has been nervously looking around like she's expecting something to come. She felt unsafe like she knows someone is watching them.
She was not wrong.
