Ehron's pov
(eight years ago)One year and nine months, or roughly two hundred and seventy days. That's all the time we get to train for the most important role of our lives.
Basically, what that means is that we had to come out of the gate running, or else risk being left behind. From sun up till sun down, we trained until our bodies couldn't take anymore. Well, most of us did.
We are told that those of us who put forth the best effort and stay within the top of the ranks get rewarded. It's no secret that the strongest and fastest get the best spots within their new pack.
Alpha's and Beta's.
Being the wolf of a Beta would be a huge honor. But I was aiming for the top, not second place. There are some of us here who couldn't care less who we get paired with. Not me. I cared. Otherwise, I wouldn't be killing myself physically every day to remain where I was.
The creator of the werewolf race, Selena, had a system when assigning us to our other halfs. I'm not entirely sure how she goes about doing this with each and every single human/wolf pairing, ultimately making us werewolves. My only concern was for who got to be top dog.
Selena keeps the wolf and human side separate until what she deems the age of maturity. The human side is born and raised on earth within an already established pack. Up here, she uses three different areas for those of us born wolves. The first area is for mated couples who have the honor of breeding our kind. Most litters have at least six pups, and we stay with our parents for the first three months.
Then, depending on your gender, you go to the area assigned to you. One is for females and one for males. Selena's reasoning is that it would be too easy for us to imprint with each other, and then the human side would never get a say in who they ended up with. Personally, I think it would look good on those idiots. Once upon a time, we used to have fated mates, but they went and ruined it for us.
So, at a mere three months old, we started our grueling task of training to see where we would end up. For the first couple of months, I just blended in and kept my head low. I wanted to get a feel for what I would be up against. After that, I decided to let them all know who the wolf to beat was.
You guessed it. Me.
I trained twice as hard as my strongest comepetitor and didn't let up for a second. My parents had bred at least four Luna's and one Alpha to date. More than any other mated couple. Of course, they were humble about this fact, never bragging or acting as if they were better than the others. All they wanted was to live their simple lives, here in a heavenly realm as wolves and nothing more.
For the last year and a few months, I've gone undefeated in all the different training fields that were required of us. I was faster, stronger, and sharper than my fellow competitors.
We do speed tests daily, which is my favorite one to compete in. There's something about getting your body to move so fast that eventually you can't even feel your legs anymore. I could see the trees whipping past me in a blur, and I knew my paws were hitting the ground, but once I really got going my brain no longer had to tell my body what to do.
The other thing we train for daily is strength. Sometimes, we square off against each other and fight until the other wolf is pinned down. Other times, we test our strength by seeing how much weight we can pull using rope and large tree trunks or rocks. If the mood struck our Goddess, she'd pit three against one just to see how good we really were.
