Today was the first day of August. August means that summer is coming to an end and things start to wind down. I hate the end of summer with a passion. I wish it could go on and on forever.

I had spent the entire summer with my best friend, Sydney. We did everything together. Went to the boardwalk, the beach, the waterpark, we smoked together, and drank together. Everything. So you could see how I had built these feelings up for her. Sydney was my everything.

Me and Syd were sitting out on the driveway, basking in the sun. I looked over to her glowing black, smooth skin then I looked down at her shoulder, seeing dampness form due to the hot temperature and humidity. I will never get over how beautiful she is. Not to mention her amazing personality? I love her so much. Too much. More than she'll ever know because in absolutely no universe would I ever tell her that I love her. I wouldn't be able to handle the heartbreak if we ever had to break up. It would be losing my lover and best friend in the same day. I can't lose her.

"Want to go to the beach?" She spoke as she turned to face me. Her dark brown eyes glow like thick honey in the sunlight. I take her expression in, the look in her eyes, the movements of her mouth, wishing it was against mine. It takes me a second to realize she's waiting for a response.

"Uh, yeah, yes lets go, we can get snacks for it." I respond after a second of silence. Syd stands up and turns to face me then puts out her hand. I froze, confused for a second. I took her hand as soon as my thoughts recollected. As soon as I hopped up with her help, I ended up in her face and she let out a little laugh. I laughed too, it was a nervous one. Our noses were inches away from touching. I take in the moment until I pull away and drop her hand with a laugh before it gets too awkward. She laughs as well and as we walk back into the house, she links her arm through mine.

We laugh ourselves into the house and unlink when we both start getting snacks. I got the drinks and she was getting the snacks, she was the best at picking out snacks.

"Are we tanning or are we bringing our boards?" I asked her as I snuck up behind her and put my chin on her shoulder — platonically of course — with a big shit-eating grin on my face. She turned to my face on her shoulder with a smile and responded with "Tanning, we surfed yesterday."

I ran to get a bag to stuff our snacks and drinks in and ran back into the kitchen, holding it open for her to dump everything in. I smiled happily looking at all the fruit roll ups she put in there, knowing how much I love them, which put a little flutter in my stomach at how well she knows me.

"Should we bring the cooler? It's really hot out." I asked her as I stared at the soda's inside the cloth bag.

"You know what, thats probably smarter than what we're doing right now." She responded with a grin.

"Alright I'll fill up a plastic container with ice and you go get the cooler in the garage." I told her as I squatted down to get Tupperware from the lower cabinets. She hummed in agreement and ran out the front door to get to the garage. I smiled to myself, thinking about how the rest of the day would probably go.

We were finally set and ready to leave for the beach. We both got into the car after saying goodbye to the adults in the house. Since Syd is a better driver than I am, she drove the short ride to the beach. Literally took us not even 5 minutes to get there.

"I just realized we could've biked." I say and I look over to her as she parallel parks.

"Uh who would've carried the cooler on their bike?" She asks as if it would have to be her.

"Well you are a better biker than me so probably you!" I say and close my eyes with a large smile. She rolls her eyes.

"Exactly why we took the car." She says with a laugh. We both unbuckled and got the supplies out of the car and started the trek up the long, agonizing hill to the actual beach. I felt the sweat drip down my back and grimaced at the unpleasant feeling.
