We must've been there for an hour or so before I felt a small tickling sensation around my ankle. I briefly glanced down, seeing a garden snake slithering up my pants. I felt heat rising to my cheeks and Thalia gave me a short glance before chatting some more with Marjorie about princess cuts.
"Ma'am?" I interjected. "Where's your bathroom?"
"Oh, it's just down the hall and two doors on the right!" Marjorie smiled at me. She looked really happy to be talking about her husband in such a positive light. I was glad we didn't go with Thalia's plan of just saying she was long lost family and just flat-out asking about Claude's grave.
I practically ran into the bathroom and slammed the door shut, and shook my leg wildly until the snake thumped up against the door. Tempest turned back into a human, glaring at me as she rose back to her full height. "What the fuck?"
"You- You were crawling up my leg!" I whisper-shouted, straightening out my pants and blushing furiously.
"I had to get your attention discreetly," Tempest muttered, almost sounding like she was offended. "I won't do it again."
I sighed. I wasn't sure why I reacted the way that I did, but I realized Tempest was right, and that was the only way. "It's fine. I just... did you figure it out?"
She nodded.
"What took you so long?" I asked her.
"I got... distracted."
"For an hour?"
Tempest smiled slyly at me. "Um, let's just say that Marjorie has a very interesting legal record."
My eyes widened. Marjorie was a criminal? I mean, she was the sweetest lady like, ever. Tempest pulled a small manila folder out of her backpack. "I was copying the whole thing so I could show it to you tonight. It's crazy."
I smiled. "Wait, how crazy?"
"Oh my gods, like-"
Someone knocked on the door.
Thalia's voice said, "We have to go, remember? That project is due later tonight?"
I shushed Tempest and she nodded, swiftly turning back into a snake. I caught her before she dropped to the floor and slipped her right back in my pocket. "Be right out!" I flushed the toilet and quickly washed my hands before opening the door.
Thalia and I said goodbye to Marjorie and left the brownstone. We formed a small barrier with our bodies as Tempest turned back into a human, shielding her from the public eye. We handed her the magical fake IDs, turning back into ourselves, and she put them away. I wondered how she'd learned to make something like that, but I didn't bother asking. Tempest is just sort of weird like that.
"What the fuck took you so long?" Thalia asked.
"I had trouble finding it," Tempest told her, lying. Thalia started going off about how long she had to sit there and hear about the different ways to cut a gemstone, but I was a little hung up on the fact that Tempest hadn't mentioned the record thing to Thalia. She met my eyes, and slowly shook her head.
