Chapter Five

"Where is she?! " Helen asked in a furious voice. "Ma'am, please we have to ask Miss Leni if you can come in first" a maid answered. She immediately got a hot slap on her cheek. "How dare you say such thing to me? This is my brother in-law's house. I can come here anytime I feel like and if you ever get the guts to talk to me like that again you will regret it. " Helen stormed off into the house. Leni woke up suddenly with a stretch owing to the noise in the house. "What is happening this early morning? "She got up and yawned. As she was about to step down, her aunty swang her door open and she could see the fury the woman's eyes. " Oh no, what a horrible way to start my day"She whispered. "Aunty Helen... " she was cut off. "Shut up, Leni. Why didn't you tell me you adopted a child? Do you think my brother in-law's house is an orphanage? The next time I come here I want to see that girl out of this house" she warned. "Aunty Helen please listen to me, okay? I wanted my own child at 18 and I got it. What's your problem? " Leni asked politely. "What's my problem? You have the audacity to ask me what's my problem? Leni this is a family house, we don't accept foreigners and.." "Marie is not a foreigner, okay?!!! "Leni screamed and breathed loudly,finally being not able to endure her aunt again. Her aunt gasped and continued"You just raised your voice at me because of that outsider? What an..."" Aunty please, get out. Don't ever call my daughter a stranger for me to hear it again. Marie is now my daughter and will always be my daughter. And if I give birth to my own babies. I will treat her the same way I will treat them. I have accepted her and uncle has too so please, I don't really need your opinion. I'm sorry, please leave! " Leni exclaimed. She turned to door to see Marie standing at the corner of the door. Leni could see her worried face and tears were almost out of her eyes. Marie ran back into her room when she saw Leni looking at her. "Marie! " Leni called and followed her. "Oh gosh, I just hope she didn't hear anything" she said to herself. Leni opened Marie's door and she saw her lying on the bed with her head bent in a pillow. "Marie, dear. Are you crying? " she said softly and touched her shoulders. "I'm an outsider" Marie painfully said sobbed in-between. "Oh no dear. Don't ever say that. You are my daughter and everything I have is yours too okay? " Leni tried to calm her down. "Really? " Marie asked still crying. "Yes dear, don't worry, you will be ok" Leni encouraged. "Thank you mummy." Marie hugged her and Leni was quite surprised because Marie has never been this affectionate. Leni smiled and hugged her tightly. "Have you eaten? "Leni asked. " No"Marie responded quickly. "Come on, let's go and have breakfast" Leni offered. She walked down to see Helen still standing. She could feel the burning rage inside her. "Aunty, I asked to leave. " she politely said with an get in her words. "Listen, I won't leave till I get this idiot.... " "please , please. Ok it's look like I have to force you out myself. " Leni cut her off. Then, she called one of the maids to call her bodyguards. Just then, they threw Helen out of the house and the last words she muttered before leaving the house was, "You are doing a very wrong thing. Your dead parents and brother will not be happy with you. You will regret this. " Leni shivered when she heard her talk about her dead parents and brother. She was the only one who knew her brother was very much alive but in a coma. That night of the accident, she had a call from a hospital who told her that her parents and her brother had been in a terrible accident and were fighting for their lives. She didn't want to disturb her uncle so she got one of the drivers to drive her to the hospital. She got there only to get the information that her parents were dead and only her brother survived but he was also half dead and there was a small chance that he could survive. But gradually and hopefully, there were able to treat his brother's wounds on his sleep. She couldn't wait for her brother to get up so that they can fight everything together. She was almost at tears when realization hit her and she saw Marie standing right beside her when aunty talked about her parents. "Mu..mummy" Marie stuttered. "Let's go and eat" she quickly changed the topic and they headed to the dining hall. As always, food was served and she began to eat with Marie. Usually, when she started getting close to her four-year old daughter, she would talk and laugh with her but today, there was total silence in the hall except the cluttering of cutlery. "Marie, you will start school tomorrow, okay? " Leni broke the silence. Marie didn't say anything and she nodded. After breakfast, they both went their separate ways. Marie thought her mother is not in the mood to talk so she went quietly to her room and Leni went to her brother's room thinking Marie needed rest. She went there only to see his brother's eyes widely opened and struggling to speak.
