It was 2013 when I decided to live with my mother and my grandmother in Tennessee. My father (Paul) was too "busy" to take care of me. I was 16 years old and trapped in the smoke of my parent's divorce, boardom, and lonleyness. Everyone has always said to me happiness is a choice but how could I choose to be happy when there was nothing to be happy about? My mother ( Dorithy) drove into my drive way in North Carolina. I had been living there for the past five years and haven't seen my mom sense. I had to say goodbye to a few friends but we weren't close. Niether was my mother and I, but I loved my grandmother, we were close. I steped out with a couple boxes, a big suit case and a small duffle bag and my purse by my waist. I wanted to make an impression so I curled my dark brown hair (even though I wished it was blonde so Dorithy would like me more), I wore the nicest clothes I owned, a purple blowse and a black skirt, I put on more makeup than usual, and even though Dorithy hated them, I still had on my favorite braclets and necklace.
I smiled, waiting for a satisfying response, but instead I saw Dorithy, smoking a sigar and on the phone. She roled down the window and yelled to me, "Get in the car!" My smiled turned to a frown and I stumbled into the car after setting my things in the back seat. She toled whoever she was talking to that she would call them back and looked at me for a second. She brethed deeply, then said "Look at you, all grown up..." In that moment, it actually looked like she loved me, but then that moment ended by the words of "Pull your shirt up and sit up straight!" She snapped. The whole drive to Tennesee was listening to my ear plugs or sleeping. When we finally got there we past a couple houses in the nighborhood then got to the small, old house, my grandmother was waiting in the living room. I picked up my stuff and took a gaze at the house and took a breathe. I tripped up the steps and opened the screen door then opened the red wooden door, noticing that the number seven had fallen off.
There stood my short grandmother with open arms, I smiled and said, "Hello grandma April." I made my way into her arms, she squeezed tight and swished back and forth. "How is my favorite grand daughter?" She asked letting me free from suffication. "Don't you mean, your only grand daughter?" I said. Grampa died before she could have any more kids than Dorithy. Then my parents devorced and didn't have any more kids than my brother and I. I never knew granpa, but I hured he was incredibly handsome, so says April. I'd seen a few photos, but they were in black and white and old, so I couldn't see his face clearly. Dorithy was on the phone again and went straight to her room. April grabed my hand and glared at Dorithy as she shut the door then said, "Well Eve, I guess I'll take you up to your room." She put my hand around her hooked arm and said, "Now make use of yourself and help your grandmother up the stares." She patted my hand and led me down the hall way and up the green steps.
There at the top stood my little brother Ryan, small 7 year old, brown messy hair, adorable dimples. I hadn't seen him in two years. Paul went and picked him up and braught him back to North Carolina to visit for a month, I didn't want to see Dorithy. We had to split when they devorced. I went with dad, he stayed with mom. I decided I needed to make the sacrifice of going to Paul's. He needed grandma more than I did.
"Hey Ryan!" I reached down to hug him, Iv'e only seen pictures of him for the past 2 years. He hugged me aroung my hips and squeezed, I squeezed to and nelt down. "How you been buddy?" He tilted his head a little. He didn't talk much. I took his hand and went into my room.
To the right was a queen bed with a night stand and a lamp, on the left was a tall yellow dresser I used as a kid. At the end of the room was a window covered in trees. Close to the window was a small narrow walk in closet. The wall paper was cracked but still smelt like it did when I was younger, yellow with light purple flowers. "Still the same." I said. April nodded. I put my stuff on my bed. Then my grandma said, "You start school in 3 days, your mother got your registration in and she has a surprise for you tomorrow."
"Really?" I was surprised she had a surprise.
It was only 6:22pm so I unpacked completly and went to bed at 10:43.
