A piercing light and alarm sounded from the phone laying on the bedside table.
"Stay home. No work today". Dominic read wearily. He rolled over and tossed his phone over to the other side of the bed. He slowly awakened and adjusted his eyes to the darkness of his bedroom, listening to the sound of the continuous rainfall tapping against the small window panes opposite his bed.
Dominic hadn't had a day off in roughly a month. Working multiple seasonal jobs on the North Shore of Long Island resulted in working crazy schedules, all different hours, Spring through Fall, taking whatever jobs and money one could get. He welcomed the break. The stillness from his landlords first floor above him and the soothing rainfall put Dominic back to sleep.
Bad Company's ringtone woke him up a couple of hours later.
"Hello?" he mumbled.
"Dom, are you off today? Must be. Sound like shit."
"Yep. What's up Dad?"
"Can you come over to the house today? I want to go over plans for the deck before Angelo comes over later."
"Uh, Sure. What time?"
"Come on over after you wake up. I'll grab us some bagels and coffee. Haven't seen you in a while, it'll do this old man some good to see his kid."
"Yep. Yeah. Ok, I'll text you when I'm on my way," he responded his voice still raspy. When he hung up with his dad the time depicted on his phone was 8:56. "Damn, I can't remember the last time I slept this long." He stretched and threw his sheets off him and headed into the bathroom and turned on the shower. Shortly after he stepped under the cold water, the shock ran through his system invigorating him. Dominic let the water compound on his back and neck, and flow over his chest, running down the rest of his body. The body wash container was empty. Annoyed he stepped out quickly and opened the cabinet underneath the sink. He couldn't find another bottle but saw a large plastic container shoved all the way to the back of the cabinet. He quickly tossed the bottle into the garbage and jumped back into the shower stall.
"Fuck that shit." He said to himself out loud in the shower. "Get the fuck outta here. You gotta be kidding me."
A large bottle of Peach and Vanilla scented body wash laid in the garbage. Dominic finished his shower quickly and after drying off he took the bathroom garbage out of the can and chucked it into the kitchen garbage and closed the bag tightly. He grabbed his clothes that were laid out for his job from the previous night and slid on his work boots, grabbed his phone, keys, wallet, and garbage and headed out the door.
The body wash belonged to his ex- fiancé who had left him close to a year ago for her boss. Her name was Jessica and he thought she was the one. He had worked so hard to give her everything that she wanted and thought she deserved, but nothing was real as he soon found out. Her boss lived Manhattan and would have a private car pick her up multiple times a week from the office and bring her to his penthouse where he would wine and dine, then fuck her. He had realized she began to dress better and got into the habit of asking Dominic for more expensive gifts more frequently. She used to put him on a guilt trip and demean him with constant comments like "You work so much but have no money to buy me this small gift? Happy wife happy life Dominic." He ended it as soon as he received a video mistakenly sent by Jessica to him instead of her boss Nino with her on her knees sucking him off.
The rain continued to pour all the way from East Hampton to Port Jefferson. He was glad to at least have something to do today to distract him from the bullshit and memories he experienced earlier that morning but he was unnerved knowing that she still had a hold over him to make him react like that.
