The doors of Chipotle jingled open as Riley and I stepped through the glass doors into its cool air conditioned interior. We got two Chicken burritos and two bottles of water and found a booth by the windows.
“I was thinking of taking you somewhere fancier for our first date but I figured you’re not the cliché classy dinner type,” Riley said as we slid into our seats.
“You got that right,” I replied, ignoring his subtle reminder that we were, in fact, on a date. “Chipotle’s good. Plus, I don’t think I’ll fit in in a five star restaurant, what with what I’ve got on.” I looked down at my jeans and shirt ensemble with a laugh.
“I like your shirt,” Riley commented as I took a bite from my burrito. “Maroon 5 songs are my jam.”
“Thought you had One Direction on repeat,” I replied as I swallowed. Then I realized what I just said.
Riley chewed slowly as he stared at me with a smug smile.
“What?” I asked, pretending not to know what just happened.
He continued to look at me with that same triumphed expression even after he swallowed.
“You were creeping on my Twitter, huh?” He accused with a glint in his eye.
“Hmm?” I asked as I took a big bite of my burrito to buy me some time.
“Jane stalked my Twitter,” Riley singsonged softly as he took a swig from his water bottle.
“Riley tweeted about me,” I singsonged back, wiping my mouth with a table napkin.
“Oh, and what makes you think that was about you?” Riley teased, raising his eyebrow at me.
“Well, it was either that or you’re crazy for Harry Styles,” I rebutted.
“I’m not crazy for Harry Styles,” Riley said with a gentle smile, looking straight into my eyes.
I balled up the table napkin in my hand nervously.
“Cause I’m a Niall boy,” he finished with a goofy grin.
I laughed. “Well played, McDonough,” I said. “Well played.”
Just then, my phone rang.
It was Ryan.
“Hello?” I said, putting the phone to my ear while looking at Riley.
He still had a hint of a smile on his face as he continued to eat.
“Jane, do you have my Physics book?” Ryan asked from the other end of the line. “I can’t find it anywhere and I need to get started on my homework.”
“Wow, homework on a Saturday night, huh?” I replied with a chuckle. “That’s not the Ryan I know.”
Riley’s smile faded.
“Well, sorry, not all of us can get a date with the famous,” Ryan replied sarcastically. “Plus, we have this wedding rehearsal to attend tomorrow so my Sunday’s full. Anyway, do you have it?”
“Not sure,” I answered. “It could be on my bedside table. Call the house and ask Maggie to check.”
“Okay, thanks,” Ryan said. “Oh and, have fun with Rileeeyyyy,” he added in a teasing tone.
“Very mature,” I whipped back and clicked off the phone.
“So,” Riley said slowly as I put my phone back in my pocket. “You and Ryan are pretty tight, huh?”
“Yeah, he’s been my best friend since sixth grade,” I replied, taking a sip from my water bottle.
“Oh. Best friend,” he mumbled.
