Sierra

My heart was still pounding when I walked into my apartment. I couldn't stop smiling at the thought of what Penn said.

"He really has a way with words," I thought as I locked my door.

I sat on the couch and called my best friend, Tracy.

"So how did the date go?" Tracy asked playfully.

"We kissed!" I squealed and kicked my feet in excitement.

"NO WAY!! How was the date?"

"You already know! He was so sweet and the date was amazing! He told me that he felt the same way, and we had a lot of fun! I can't wait to see him again. I literally can't stop smiling right now!"

"Oh my gosh, Sierra! I am so happy for you! I knew back when you were still dating him in high school that you two would end up together."

"Oh, stop!" I said humbly. "You don't know how this'll turn out, yet."

"Maybe, but you can't deny me when I tell you that this is fate!"

"Whatever, Tracy," I said, still smiling.

"So, how'd your ex-husband feel about you running off to California on such short notice?"

"Oh, you know..." I started as my smile began to fade away, "He'll manage. I mean we're divorcing for a reason right?"

"Does Penn know about James?"

"No, he does not. But that shouldn't be a problem as long as James and I stay divorced. Plus, I don't plan on keeping it a secret forever. I'll tell Penn soon enough, it just depends on how things go between us."

"By the way, are your parents helping out at all? I know things are a lot more expensive out there in California than it is here in Maryland."

I let out a deep sigh and replied, "Not really. I'm literally looking for a job right now. I can't believe that my life has come to the point where I'm so desperate for money that I have to work. My parents are cutting me off because they're furious about the way that I'm handling the divorce and my bank account is starting to look dry, so I don't have a choice."

"Sierra, my heart is breaking for you! The next time I get my allowance, I'll send you a cut."

"Aww, thank you, Tracy. I'm going to go take a shower and head to bed soon. I'll text you later."

"Okay, bye, Sierra!"

I hung up the phone and was reminded of Penn's kiss again. My cheeks began to hurt from how hard I was smiling. He was such a gentleman when he walked me to my car. I was so glad to have moved to California and be reunited with Penn.

"But wait!" I thought. I remembered Penn's friend, Jason, at the pool with him the day that I ran into Penn. When I first saw them at the pool, I assumed they were just friends, but the more I thought about the way that they looked at and acted around each other, the more I started to think that maybe there was something else there.

After all, Penn did seem incredibly worried when Jason passed out, even though he said they had just met.

Then I realized, "But no! It can't be like that! Or else Penn wouldn't have kissed me tonight. He wouldn't have looked at me the way that he did."

I assured myself that no matter what Penn thought about Jason, it was likely not what I believed it to be. I went to bed and slept off my unnecessary feelings of jealousy and basked in my happy memory of Penn's kiss.
