My family and friends are blind. They don't take the time to see what's underneath. All they see is the smile on my face and hear the joy in my laughter. I go to school as usual. Pretending everything is okay, but then I remember the scars on my hips and flip my smile around. People just don't seem to notice that I'm dying inside. I walk through the halls cluelessly. Just passing the time. The dismissal bell rings. I hear myself whisper "Oh no, time to go home".

*******************

I open the door and hear the same old noise "why are you late?" I can smell the foulness in his breath and I shakily answer "At school, there was there was a meeting"

"You sure you aren't out doing drugs? Or having fun with boys?" He says nuzzling my neck.

"Please....not tonight" I begged, but he already started taking my shirt off.

We blindly make our way to the bedroom and the same old routine unfolded; come home, get laid, clean-up and pretend like nothing happened.

I hear the door open and hurriedly rush to my room.

"Charlotte, I'm home!" I hear my mother call.

"Down there in a minute" I say fighting back the tears. I race to the stairs, but Lorenzo makes it down before I do. As usual I watch him caress my mother with love.

My mother is blind. I awkwardly watch them kiss for a brief moment until I break the silence with the usual question.

"How was work?"

We lose ourselves at dinner occasionally laughing about senseless things.

Moments later I felt my stress fade as I made my way to my room.
