Cold...

Why is it so cold and dark?

I slowly sit up and my back is drenched. A shiver crawls up my skin and leaves a trail of goosebumps. I try to recall the events in my head. All I can remember is being on patrol with my brother. I move my legs closer to me and an ache fills my body. I groan and rub at my sides when I hear a small noise.

That's it. The same noise I had heard when I was on patrol. I had gone to check it out and now I'm here.

"Help! Over here!" I called out but there was no reply. Not even a sound.

My head begins to spin. Did I end up ambushed and beaten? I was in so much pain. I tried to pull myself up, but something was holding me back. I wasn't shackled though. How? I pulled my arm as far as I could reach and the faint glow of shimmery red chains appeared. Light filters in and I wince at the overwhelming light. I scoot away from what appears to be a person in the doorway.

"Garroth?" I asked quietly. "Why are you doing this to me?" A deep laugh fills the room and I feel a pit in my stomach.

"Oh Kayla, you look so cute with all that fear." He said. "And you are going to be very useful to me."

He stepped closer and had me face him. I look away and my brain overloads with the memories I had long forgotten.

"You can't escape Kayla. You. Are. Mine." He says and begins to walk away.

"What makes you so sure I can't?" I spat.

"Kayla just look at yourself." He said and laughed, closing the door.

"I WILL NEVER HELP YOU GENE! NOT AFTER WHAT YOU DID TO ME!" I shout.

I remember him. The day he had escaped the portal and rained chaos in my village. I had just finished buying ingredients to make supper when his army attacked. I helped whomever I could as I made my way back home. My family was in danger, and I didn't have my sword. When I arrived at my doorstep, the house had been broken into. I ran inside and there was so much blood. My husband shielded my son at the center of the house. Their skin was pale, and my sword was at my feet. When I looked back at the village, everyone was dead.

I cry escapes my lips and I fall to my knees. I couldn't breathe. A voice coos, "Come with me."

I get up and draw my sword, "You will regret this, Gene."

Gene laughs, holding his arms up, and walks towards the woods. I couldn't bring myself to go after him.

I spent weeks giving the village a burial as it was all I could do to keep myself busy. Once I had finished burying my husband. I could hear his voice and my son's laugh echoed in my ears. I couldn't stay here. Not anymore.

I made my way to Phoenix Drop, a village where my brother lived, and sought sanctuary. Although Garroth had advised against it, I trained and became a guard. I started a new life in Phoenix Drop.

Once Gene had left, I checked my pockets for anything to set me free. There was a small pin, I pull my arm and the magic around the shackles was gone. Maybe it was due to Gene leaving. I wasn't going to wait and find out. I picked at the locks and freed myself, I stood up and had to catch my balance. I felt around for a sign of a door. Finding its cold knob, I turned it and peeked. Waited for the coast to be clear. Nothing but the song of crickets, pushing my way out. I stumbled into a tree, I stepped back and there was the initials 'M + K' and a faint memory comes to mind.

"Little sister! Where are you?" Garroth calls out. I quiet my giggles as I hide behind a rock.

"Found you!" Vlayd shouts and both of my brothers tackle me.

I had gotten so upset that they had found me that I climbed up my favorite tree. I closed my eyes and let the gentle breeze bring me to a state of calm. I feel something poke my arm when I open my eyes there was a boy. His eyes were a beautiful shade of green and his hair was dark.

"Hi! I'm Mike and you?" He said.

"I'm Kayla."

We talked and become friends. Friends to lovers. Before I knew it had been years since that day and under that same tree. He proposed to me.

"Kayla, you are strong, beautiful, and stubborn. And ever since I met you. I thought, Why me? Out of all the princes, lords, and dukes. You chose me and I chose you. Will you marry me?" He asked.

I snap back and wipe the stray tears. Running through the woods and discovering the faded marks of when I first made my way to the gates of Phoenix Drop.
