We were crossing the Potomac when we spotted the helicopter. It was a sleek, black military model just like the one we'd seen at Westover Hall. And it was coming straight toward us.

"They know the van," I said before anyone started driving. "We have to ditch it."

So, apparently, a little background on my dear friend Tempest; she's psychotic. I'm not even joking. There is something wrong with the chemical balance in her brain or maybe Mr. D just made her go crazy or something. Every aspect of her life is influenced by it, including her driving.

I didn't want her to drive in the first place, since it felt like a really bad idea, and as far as I knew, Tempest didn't even have a license. But she ran to the van faster than Thalia or Zoe ever could and basically forced the duty of driving onto herself.

Which brings me to now.

"WHERE DID YOU LEARN TO DRIVE?!" I shrieked as I hung onto a seatbelt for dear life.

"BLAH-AH-AH!" Grover did as somersault as he flew to the back of the van.

Tempest swerved wildly. I swear she was making turns at like, seventy miles an hour.

She swerved into the fast lane. The helicopter wasn't gaining as much anymore, and I was very scared to look at the speedometer. I was also scared there might be cops.

"Where are we going?" Zoe demanded Tempest as she sat in the passenger seat.

"I dunno," Tempest admitted, looking in her mirrors. "I'm just getting away from the copter."

"You can't outrun a helicopter!" I argued.

"No, you can't. I can."

I paled. "You say that like you've done it before."

Tempest didn't answer me.

"Maybe the military will shoot it down?" Grover said hopefully as he climbed back to the front, rubbing his head.

"The military probably thinks it's one of theirs," I said. "How can the General use mortals, anyway?"

"Mercenaries," Zoe said bitterly. "It is distasteful, but many mortals will fight for any cause as long as they are paid."

"But don't these mortals see who they're working for?" I asked. "Don't they notice all the monsters around them?"

Zoe shook her head. "I do not know how much they see through the Mist. I doubt it would matter to them if they knew the truth. Sometimes mortals can be more horrible than monsters."

Suddenly, Tempest growled in frustration, "ZOE, WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T YOU FILL UP ON GAS?"

Thalia's face went white. "We're out of gas?"

"Nearly!" Tempest called back. She wasn't even buckled up, and her red eyes looked frenzied right about now.

Thalia closed her eyes. "Hey, Dad. A lightning bolt would be nice about now. Please?"
