Klaire POV:
I woke up and took a deep breath. Another day in the darkness starts yet again. My hands shuffled around the bedside table, searching for my sunglasses. I felt the lenses and put them on. I got up from bed and put on some fuzzy slippers that were right on the corner. I was so happy that I didn’t have to use my walking cane at home. The doctor said that if I knew my surroundings very well, I wouldn’t need to use it in the house. I hated the stick. I know it is supposed to help me get used to it and not get injured, but it's annoying. It makes me feel like a freak. When I hold onto it outside, I can feel the hard stares of the people there and hear them whispering, thinking that I can't hear them or something. Am I a show? The circus?
"Hey grandma, grandpa? Good morning!" I yelled as I got ready. My grandpa laughed. "Good morning? More like good afternoon Klaire. It's already 3pm." "What?!?" Already? I hurried on down to eat. It was quiet; grandpa was probably reading the newspaper and gran was washing the dishes. Grandma broke the silence after a few minutes. "So are you going to visit your little friend from yesterday?" I wondered what she was talking about, but then I remembered.
Keaton Stromberg. He asked to meet him again today. I didn't know whether to come or not, to trust him. I mean I have reasons. I just met him a day ago and I still don’t know a lot about him. What if he was a bad person? I wouldn’t know, he made me feel special yesterday. I didn’t think he was, but if he was, what would I do?
Anyways, I finished eating and went back up to my room, closed the door, and laid on my bed sighing. My question was easy: should I or should I not go? I heard my door creak open. "Hello?" I asked questionably.
"Honey, are you alright?" I recognized the voice. "Hey grandma." She sat beside me on my bed. "Dear, I don’t mean to intrude on your life, but it seems as though you are confused right now for some reason. Is there anything I need to help you with?" she asked. I told her about how I was feeling about the meeting today and all of my doubts. "So what should I do grandma?"
She waited until I was done to start talking. "Well most people would tell you to follow your heart but I don’t think that will help. Your heart is the one that is confused. My opinion is that you should go. You have to take some risks sometimes and I think that this a risk worth taking. But it is your choice at the end so choose wisely." She got off of the bed and left the room, closing the door slowly.
I laid back down. It took a few minutes and then I got back up again. I reached for my cane. "See you later! I'm going for a walk." I shouted as the door shut, welcoming me into the outside world. I tried to remind myself where the bench was. Unlike other people, it's unfortunate that I cannot see and tell the difference between each one. I tried to recall my step towards the bench the other day.
I couldn’t remember so I just sat down on a regular, empty bench frustrated. Almost every bench was filled with either friends, families, couples, you name it. It was, after all, the busiest time of day in Huntington.
I waited and got bored after a few seconds so I put on my headphones and let my head fall back. The music played immediately and the song 'A-Team' by Ed Sheeran came on. This song meant a lot to me because of my dad and all with his drugs and other crap. It spoke to my inner soul and his voice was beautiful. I daydreamed for what seemed like forever. Then, suddenly, my headphones got taken out of my ear. I looked up.
"Who's there?" I caught their hand in the air. "Whoa there. It's just me, Keaton. Remember?" "Oh.." I replied. "Sorry about hitting your hand. I thought you were someone with bad intentions." He laughed. "Bad intentions? Well, it's fine. It doesn’t matter." I kept my head down.
"So, where are you taking me exactly?" To be honest, I was excited. I had a friend and he was taking me somewhere. That seemed like a dream come true. He took held of my wrist and said, "It's a surprise. I'm just going to lead you there."
