(A Flowey-Centric oneshot.)
You talked to him everyday.
The little buttercup growing in the abandoned flower shop. He was taller than the rest, greedily spreading his roots farther than the rest, his lush petals blocking the other flowers from the nourishing light of the sun.
Once upon a time, you'd mistaken him for a weed. That time has long since passed.
"Hellllo Sunshine!" His high-pitched, saccharine voice makes your ears perk in awareness. He stood among the fellow flowers, except, he was the only one speaking. "What exactly have we here."
"I uh, brought you some more water and some fertilizer as a treat." You feel odd talking to something that isn't human. The integration of monsters hasn't existed for even half a decade yet. "I also have my weed clippers."
Ah yes, you do fondly remember coming by the old shack that you and only you tend to, spotting the oversized buttercup and attempting to snip the flowery head right off. The thought carried no weight until a vine caught your wrist, just as the clippers had connected, thorns cutting flesh as a monstrous face glared into yours.
You two didn't exactly start on the best of terms. You've got a scar that encircles your wrist, a bracelet of thorns. He's a scar (or at least, the monster-plant equivalent) around his 'neck', a necklace of clippers.
"Ooo I'm glad you have those!" Eager vines reach for your clippers, you pull them away, watching as your floral friend frowns. "Hey!"
"I still don't get why you don't just rip em' up yourself." Your tone is nonchalant, a hint of amusement as you get down on both knees, cutting, cutting cutting away at all the weeds that threaten to invade his sunlit sanctuary.
Oh, how you used to loathe the gaping hole in the wooden ceiling. Thinking it an opportunity for bugs and mold to slip into your silent safe house and fester. Little did you know, it was actually a food source for your floret friends. As, plants, even monster ones, need light to grow.
How little you knew.
"That'd be so tedious." A dramatic sigh rolls off his tongue as you tsk at another overgrown weed. "I'm not strong enough anyway. The air here is too musty."
"Would you like me to open a window?" You ask, turning to him in your crouched position. "Help yourself to the water and mulch. I'll open it."
You go on and unscrew the cap of the purest bottled water you could find. Setting it near him, you also tear open the package of fertilizer. It's not too terribly big, just enough for you to massage into the soil to ensure your little bud grows right.
Pouring the dark, rich substance onto the ground, you cover it in a layer of dirt. There. It'll really get into the ground now. "Enjoy." You mutter, rising off your knees and pacing over to a nearby window. They've been shut tight for years. Time for you to fix that.
A powerful gust of wind nips at your face as you pull open a dusty window, your senses abused by scents of dust, must, and unkempt buildup. Even a spider web hits your face with little remorse, though you peel it off and stomp back over to the sunny patch without missing a beat.
"Better?" You ask, looking down to see your little pal holding the water bottle upside-down with his vines. Water pours rapidly from its plastic cage and into the thirsty soil.
"Yeah." He replies, black eyes flitting up to you. "Thanks... for everything." He seems content with you. Good. That's what you wanted.
"Say," Pretty golden petals swish as his head swivels to you again. "How about I give you a treat for all your help?" His smile is wide, genuine.
"A treat?" You stoop down on one knee, staining your pants with a horrible brown muck, but you don't mind for now. "Like what?"
"Close your eyes!" A leaf flicks wildly at you, forcing you to wince back and squeeze your eyes shut out of reflex. "No peeking!"
A soft sigh escapes you as you hear a small pop noise. You don't peek until a tap of a vine hits the skin on your knuckles, easing your hands away from your eyes. When you look, he's holding a golden heart pendant, his smile big but black eyes misty.
"Cute." You say, accepting the gift in both hands. Instantly noticing the seam along the side, you flick the little thing open, finding a picture of a human child on one side, bright brown eyes, shaggy brown hair, and rosy cheeks. On the other side is a picture of a small, humanoid goat child. Probably a monster.
"Who are they?" You ask, curious. He probably doesn't know. It's likely that this is just a random trinket he found somewhere in the old shop. Maybe pictures of the old owner's kids.
A pause causes you to look back to your thorny companion. He's still, smile gone, face calculating. You clench the pendant in your hand, confused.
"Ah, what do they matter? We'll never see them again." He says, an unarguable finality in his voice as he drags his gaze up to meet yours. "It's yours now. They could be strangers, soulmates, people you never got to meet. People you never want to meet..."
Why does the necklace suddenly feel heavier in your hand.
"Fl—"
"Really, don't worry about it." His grin is solemn, almost, eyes glassy, a fire behind them. Your stomach churns at the weight of the simple charm. "You should be leaving around now anyways. Don't let me keep you."
Just like that, you're dismissed with the wave of a leaf. You rise, unsteady on your feet as you make your exit.
Putting the accessory around your neck, you don't know if you'll be able to take it off.
