The darkness was petrifying. But I think the cold chains that encompassed my body were worse.
Adrenaline. I could practically feel the natural chemical coursing through my veins. It made my heart beat like a drum in my ears, my body shaking and sweat collecting at points along my hairline.
It was just a jog.
I shouldn't have ignored the newscasts. I shouldn't have been alone.
But I did and I was and now here I am. Death will most certainly be upon me tonight. By the time anyone even realizes that I'm gone; it will be too late.
The stomp of heavy boots against cement echoed down the corridor that lay ahead of me, snapping me out of my transitory thoughts. My body became rigid, my lungs not daring to ask for air. Maybe if I sit still just long enough, I would be forgotten. The thought was oh so naive.
Seconds and hours seemed to flood together, but eventually the rattle of a door handle filled the air. I struggled against my restraints, feeling the cold metal dig into my skin. It was a pointless action. There was no escaping.
I bit down hard, bracing myself for what was next to come. When the door swung open, I cringed instinctivley. The bright beam of a flashlight hit my face. It was too much for my eyes who had become accustomed to the darkness. The chuckle that followed is a sound that will echo through my memory: deep, dark, menacing.
This was it.
