The adoption went through less than a week ago. I am officially Steve's daughter.
I walked down the hallway and opened the door on the left.
It was a room filled with plants and flowers everywhere. The greenhouse.
I closed the door and spun around, working my way into a sprint. I will never get used to how big this place is.
I ran quickly, making it to the other side of the mile long, S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in a little over a minute. I was 2 minutes late.
"Alex!" Steve said as I stepped into the training area.
He embraced me into a hug.
"Hey Steve. Where's everyone else?" I asked as I looked around the room.
I still felt a little weird calling him dad. He must have sensed it.
He chuckled and took a seat on the track.
"Nobody shows up for training early unless you're a solider from the 1940's."
I stuck my hand out, gesturing for him to get up.
"Or the daughter of a solider from the 1940's." I said with a smile.
He took my hand and stood up.
"Let's go for a run, shall we?" I asked, running around the track.
We ran around the track for about an hour. We didn't talk much. There wasn't much to say. The silence usually felt awkward to me but for some reason it wasn't. It never felt that way with Steve.
I was pulled out of my thoughts when the door creaked open and Natasha stepped inside, followed by Clint, Tony, and Bruce.
"Glad you could finally join us, even if you're a little late." Steve said as he picked up his water bottle.
"Yea yea yea, dawns early light. You're always up early. We get it." Tony said as he flopped himself down on the mats.
I threw myself down next to him and took a minute to catch my breath.
Steve sat down on the other side of him, shoving him a little.
"Say what you want, Tony. The second your suit stops working you turn into a guy in a tin can."
I couldn't help but laugh at their childish bickering.
"Alex!" Natasha yelled. I stood up and she threw her arms around me, "welcome to the family!"
I hugged her back, and smiled.
"I'm glad to be here." I said.
Clint waited behind Natasha and the second she pulled away he hugged me too.
"Hey, Clint. Where's Wanda?" I asked, looking behind him as he pulled away.
"She's probably still sleeping." He answered. He walked to the back of the room and grabbed his bow.
"Target practice or a mission?" I asked.
"Mission. Coulson needs eyes in the sky for this one. I'll be back soon." He grabbed the rest of his gear and said his goodbyes before heading out the door.
I gave Bruce a hug and sat down next to Natasha.
"Anything interesting happening this week?" I asked hoping I could do something that involved going out in the field instead of living in this training room.
"Not much. As of now, we all have time off." Tony said, "except for Barton."
We sat in silence for what felt like forever until Bruce spoke up.
"Let's go do something." He said standing up.
"Like what?" Natasha asked.
"I don't know. Let's let Alex pick." He gestured towards me and smiled.
Everyone turned to look at me. It made me feel uncomfortable. I don't really like attention that much.
"What do you wanna do, Alex?" Steve asked.
I thought it over for a minute.
"I guess there isn't really anywhere I want to go. Maybe we could all just hang out or something? I haven't done that in a while." I said, feeling a little awkward.
"Of course we can do that." Natasha said.
I smiled and walked towards Steve. He handed me his water and I took a sip before handing it back.
"I'm gonna go talk to Wanda. I'll meet you guys later." I said.
I walked out the door and headed down the long maze of hallways before making it to what I believed was Wandas' room. I knocked twice.
"Who is it?" She asked from inside. Her voice sounded quiet and a little choked up.
"It's Alex."
"Come in." She said.
I turned the handle and walked inside.
She sat on the side of her bed, still in her outfit from the day before. She held a picture of Pietro in her hands.
"Hey." I said. Obviously I'm not that great at comforting people.
"Hello." She said, forcing a smile. "I heard the adoption papers went through. Congratulations."
"Thanks." I sat down next her. "Do you want to talk?" I asked.
She signed and set the picture down.
"I'm okay. I just miss him is all. It's been so long without him but it still hurts like it just happened yesterday."
I threw my arms around her and squeezed her tight.
"It will get better. It's a good thing though. It means you wont forget about him. But you know he wouldn't want this. He gave his life to save someone and he wouldn't want it any other way. He knows you loved him, and always will, and he would want you to keep going." I said.
She smiled.
"You're right." She said. "Thank you, Alex."
I smiled and stood up.
"Come on, let's go eat. I'm starving."
"You always are." She said with a giggle as she stood up, "whatever they injected you with makes you eat more than an army." She laughed at what she said, causing me to laugh with her.
"I am an army!" I said in between breaths.
We left the room and walked down the long hallway towards the kitchen.
