Kageyama walked around with his hands stuffed in his pockets. He was confined to this school where no one could see him. Sometimes a boy with orange hair would catch glimpses of him, but nothing more than that. Kageyama was a ghost. If anyone ever saw him they were always afraid. But not as afraid as Kageyama. Afraid of being left alone. This solitude was too much to bear.
It wasn't hard for Kageyama to fall for Hinata. The short boy was cute and Kageyama longed to run his fingers through those thick curls, to touch those bright rosy cheeks. But Hinata was a world away from Kageyama. Gradually Hinata noticed Kageyama more and more.
"Who are you?" Hinata asked when they were in the change room alone.
"I used to be called Kageyama." He replied gloomily. Kageyama was surprised Hinata had even spoken to him.
"My name's Hinata."
"I know. I've been following you for a while."
"Okay..." Hinata looked slightly disturbed.
"Oh sorry, I didn't mean to come off as creepy. It's just you're the only one who can see me here." Kageyama waved his hands awkwardly, trying to wave off his offence.
"Really?" Hinata asked. Kageyama nodded solemnly.
"That sounds lonely."
"It is. I want to feel again. I can feel, just nothing from your world."
"Have you tried?" Hinata asked. Kageyama nodded yes.
"Well then... Why not try again?" Hinata asked, walking towards Kageyama. Kageyama reached out and brushed his thumb across Hinata's cheek. A shiver ran down Hinata's spine. Kageyama's thumb was cold as ice. A little colour returned to Kageyama's cheeks.
"Your hair is orange." Kageyama observed aloud.
"Yeah?" Hinata's toe was confused.
"I'm sorry if that sounded weird, I just haven't seen colour for a very long time." Kageyama yanked his hand back and looked away.
"It's fine." Hinata slowly grabbed Kageyama's hand gently and placed it back on his cheek. Kageyama rubbed Hinata's cheek with his thumb. Kageyama's hand felt refreshingly cool against his warm cheek. Colour began to flood the room. Kageyama blinked, trying to adjust to all the colour.
"Why don't you come home with me?" Hinata asked.
"I can't. I'm trapped here." Kageyama looked down.
"Oh... Why don't you try again? it worked the first time and there's no harm in trying." What Hinata said was true.
"I guess." Kageyama sighed. He had been trapped here as long as he could remember and had forgotten what the world outside was like. Kageyama had grown used to these bland white walls with only echoing excited shouts from the past when he was on the volleyball team to accompany him.
Hinata smiled and grabbed Kageyama's hand. Kageyama's hand emanated cold but Hinata held on. He led him out of the change room, but as they approached the door Kageyama's movements became slower. His limbs became heavier and it was harder for him to move. Hinata tugged at Kageyama's arm and managed to drag him to the door. It was as if a wall separated him and the outside. Kageyama leaned his forehead against the wall. Hinata stood on his tip toes to rest his forehead against Kageyama's. It was as cold as ice.
"I don't know why, but I really like you. It's like a magnetic force pulling me towards you. I'm sorry it didn't work."
"It's fine. We'll see each other again, right?" Kageyama asked, pressing his hand against the wall on Hinata's. They laced their fingers together.
"I'll see you tomorrow, after practice." Hinata said. Kageyama nodded and watched Hinata walk off. Kageyama smiled and pressed his face against the wall. Green. The trees were green and the cherry blossoms were pink.
.
As Hinata and Kageyama grew closer, it became easier for Kageyama to move towards the door. Eventually Kageyama could follow Hinata into the school and accompany him there. One day Kageyama walked out of the school alongside Hinata. Kageyama clung to Hinata's bike.
"Oni-chan!" Natsu hugged her brother tightly.
"N-ne Natsu!" Hinata hugged her back. Natsu scampered back into the house.
"That's my sister Natsu." Hinata told Kageyama. He nodded. Hinata walked in and grabbed an apple. Kageyama was able to hold some things now, but sometimes they slipped through his fingers. Hinata made sure not to hand Kageyama anything too fragile.
"Here." Hinata tossed Kageyama the apple. Kageyama caught it and took a bit. Juicy flavour flooded his mouth. Kageyama realized how much he had missed taste. Taste. What did Hinata taste like? Kageyama's eyes widened and he took step back. Kageyama and Hinata hadn't ever kissed. They cuddled plenty but hadn't done anything past that. Did Hinata want to? Kageyama became worried that perhaps he was too cold for Hinata to kiss comfortably. But if they lived together in the same world, perhaps he could feel warmth again...
"Hinata, have you ever considered coming to live in my world?" Kageyama asked.
"Hah? N-no... Wouldn't that mean like, dying?"
"Yeah, I guess." Kageyama sighed. It was worth a try anyway.
"Hinata, am I too cold to kiss?"
"Huh? No, I-I just... I didn't know if you wanted to. " Hinata stanmered, looking away.
"Do you want to?" Kageyama asked bluntly, leaning forward. Hinata looked up for a brief moment.
"S-sure..." Hinata stuttered. Kageyama moved closer to Hinata. Hinata still avoided Kageyama's gaze. Kageyama gently grabbed Hinata's chin and turned his face towards him. He pressed his lips against Hinata's tenderly. Like his hands, Kageyama's lips were refreshingly cool. Their lips moved together in sync. Kageyama pressed harder against Hinata. Hinata let himself fall against his bed. Kageyama pinned Hinata's hands above his head. They stopped only briefly for breath before continuing. But Kageyama slowed down as withdrew his tongue from Hinata's mouth. He moved his mouth to kiss Hinata's cheeks affectionately. Kageyama laid against Hinata's chest. Hinata squirmed to be on top. It was more comfortable that way. Besides, Hinata was muchlighter than Kageyama. Hinata shivered so Kageyama grabbed him a blanket to keep him warm. He wrapped it around Hinata so he could keep warm but they could still cuddle. Kageyama hugged Hinata. The cold emanating from his body was dulled by the warmth of the blanket. Kageyama loved the sweet release of sleep. He hadn't found that relief for many years.
.
Years passed. Kageyama and Hinata grew up to be inseparable. Hinata grew older and turned down any confessions, for his heart belonged to no one but Kageyama.
"What do you say we get some coffee?" Hinata suggested. Kageyama shrugged.
"Sure." Kageyama knew Hinata just wanted to get a donut. Hinata had this huge sweet tooth.
Kageyama observed the faraway mountains. He was about to point out their beauty to Hinata but he realized Hinata was already half way across the road to their car. His eyes widened with horror as he saw the oncoming truck.
"Hinata!!" He screamed and began to run forward but it was too late. The truck slammed on its breaks as it tried to screech to a halt. Hinata's eyes filled with terror as the truck approached too fast for him to process. There was a thud as the truck impacted Hinata's body. His body rolled across the road. Kageyama ran out to his lover.
"Hinata! Please... Say something, anything!" Kageyama cried, cradling Hinata's limp body in his arms. Hinata coughed. Warmth filled Kageyama. It filled his Joey as emanated from his fingertips.
"You're so warm Tobio." Hinata smiled. Kageyama cried happy tears but wished Hinata hadn't had to come to him like this. Hinata slowly stood up over his body. Kageyama hugged Hinata tightly and kissed him desperately.
"I love you." Kageyama told him as he held his orange angel's face. Hinata laughed and kissed him again.
"I love you too."
