I was sitting in class, doing my math work when the announcement came in over the loudspeaker, "can you send James Greenlaw to the office, his parents are here to pick him up". I grabbed my stuff, said goodbye to everyone and left. When I reached the car, my father asked me if I used the bathroom. I told him that I hadn't, so he handed me a bag and told me to go try before we leave.
I headed back into the school building and went into the bathroom. I closed the stall and peeked inside the bag. It contained my training briefs. I quickly put them on and headed back to the car.
You see, it's almost memorial day weekend and my father's parents were making a family reunion. Since they live 6 hours away, my parents took Thursday off and got me out of school early. Being a 9 year old bedwetter, it was the family rule that I had to wear protection for any trip longer than 2 hours, just in case I fell asleep in the car. This time it was just training briefs, but I have had to put pullups on, in the school bathroom. I just hoped that no one in school noticed me leaving with thicker underpants.
I got into the car and said hello to my 3 year old brother Davie. My mother asked if we were ready, and then we were off. About a half hour in, I was given a brand new captain underpants book and I was in seventh heaven. I just loved these books.
I must've fallen asleep at some point, because the next thing I knew, we were stopping at McDonald's for supper. As we entered, I tapped my mother's shoulder. She asked me what the problem was. Embarrassed, I motioned for her to lean down. I then whispered in her ear, that my briefs were wet. "Don't worry", she said, "we're only an hour and half away, so you can change back to your regular underwear". That felt really good to hear. Even though, I would be wearing my pullups for bed, I didn't want to enter my grandparents house wearing babyish underwear.
I went to the bathroom and put on my spiderman briefs. I then came back to order some food. I got the happy meal and a sprite. As we sat down to eat. I picked the table closest to the TV, as they were playing the braves game and I was a huge braves fan. When we finished, it was bathroom time and then we hit the road.
