dinner | Chapter 2

I head down to the dining room to have dinner, not even five minutes into dinner mom's giving out to Steven "steven put the phone away or I'll put it in the screen basket for the rest of the summer!" My mother says while shaking her head "we just want to see your beautiful faces, can this be a no phone zone? Like back in the day" susannah adds trying to back my mom up when jeremiah grabs Stevens phone and throws it onto a chair just by the door to the kitchen "boom" "okay we get it you've been working out" steven starts giving out about jeremiah "your just jealous jer has a better body than you" my younger sister belly adds, belly has been in love with jeremiah since we were 10, I can tell he likes her too I don't know why they aren't together yet tho, "actually it's all about the lean look other wise you can't get tailored suits" steven adds to belly's comment "tailored suits?" conrad repeats while laughing "when are you going to need a tailored suit man?" Jeremiah adds to Stevens comment "anyways conrad when are you going to football camp" the whole table went silent just as conrad was about to speek "uh he quit football" jeremiah says awkwardly "dude are you kidding I'd kill to play college level football!" steven complains "he could always change his mind" but just as susannah finished her sentence conrad blurred out "I'm not going to change my mind, I was going to sit on the bench all season anyways." the table is silent "so what are you going to do all summer?" I asked genuinely confused "you could work at club with me and jer!" My brother adds in "I'm not working at the club" conrad answers sounding annoyed "wait you two are working this summer?" belly asks steven and jer "yeah I'm a life gard and Stevens working at the snack shop" the table is silent again "oh jade, belly I actually got you two somthing I almost forgot about my surprise for you guys" then susannah hands us both an envelope "that's why we stopped at the country club" my mother adds looking at susannah. Me and belly start opening them while steven starts questioning what they are "I managed to get belly and jade invited to be deputies" "wait isn't that the thing where girls wear white dresses and act all posh?" I add looking at belly and susannah "no its when a girl comes of age and is presented to society" I'm honestly shocked I look at belly and we both have the same expression "the whole deb seen is bullshit its for sheep" conrad adds "no it's not its when a girl had a coming out to show she's mature" susannah starts explaining "hold on, belly? Mature? She ligit hosted a cat funeral and made us all wear black!" "Shut up steven I saw you crying in your room!" My brother and sister argued "yeah steven to be honest belly is way more mature that you" I add "no she isn't and you aren't mature either you stormed out of class bc the teacher asked you to do your presentation on a "bad day" " steven snaped back at me scoffing "Oh I'm so sorry that me having social anxiety is such a problem for you steven god, grow up and understand how stupid you sound it was a bad day i had shit going on but of course you wouldnt understand that" I yelled at him "wait mochi died, I'm so sorry bells" jeremiah says trying to defuse the situation "come on guys don't you wanna get dressed up?" Susannah asks "I mean jade I know you probably won't but belly come on you could have a really good time" "I'll think about it" belly answers I just role my eyes and storm upstairs. After a few hours I get changed into my bikini top and swim shorts then go down stairs "night swim?" My mom asks "yeah night swim" I sigh "are you okay after earlier susannah feels really bad about what she said it's just not something you would so with so many people being going to it you know?" My mom says trying to be sympathetic "yeah mom I'm fine today's just been alot." I say and start walking out side. I dive in not noticing the boy at the edge of the pool, as I resurface I realise he's smoking pot. "Didn't you say pot changes the way your brain processes information?" I ask "so does your phone." Conrad said being dismissive. I continue swimming then resurface "you said marijuana messes with white matter"  I says sarcastically "I bet you don't even know what white matter is." I roll my eyes "you said our brains are still developing and that-" "god do you memorise everything that I've said?" He cut me off smirking at me, I scoff "god get over yourself" I go under water for a bit " I mean conrad you were the one who said that smokings dumb and that real athletes don't put shit in there bodys" I said honestly sick of him "I said alot of stuff plus I'm not an athlete so" he lifts up his joint then inhales again " I still think you should quit conrad." I say concerned for him, there's a silence " what will you give me if I do?" I pause in shock.i thought to myself. I'd give him anything he wanted. "Nothing I think you should quit for yourself" I started to swim again, "hey are you going to do this whole debutante thing?" I swam over to him "I mean maybe, I might as well try make some new friends right?" I slightly laugh "but it's not like you" conrad said looking at me "don't act like you know a single thing about me conrad, plus I've nothing else going on I might as well. If belly does it then I'll do it" I look at him "if thinking I know nothing about you helps you sleep at night then sure I don't know you, but you both do realise my mom's only using you two because she never had daughters." I look over my shoulder not knowing what to say "I mean susannah's always treated me like her daughter so why not fulfill her dream right?" I begin swimming again ignoring him but when I came back steven and jeremiah were there "go get changed and be out side in the next 10 minutes were going to the bonfire" steven yells at me while going back inside I get out of the pool and head to me room. This party isn't going to end well is it?
