Captain Y/N walked with his head down, lost in thought. Looking up, he arrived at his destination—a small dark green tent, one belonging to a certain Major he knew. There weren't many soldiers around; it was late at night, and he had been stuck with the General for hours.Outside the tent, Y/N heard Violet's voice. "Major Gilbert, I have finished reading this book."
"Good. Now finish reading this one," Gilbert instructed the young girl.
Y/N, knowing they were already inside the tent, called out, "Hey Gil, you in there?"
"Yeah, come in," Gilbert said, instantly recognizing his friend's voice.
The Captain walked in and saw both Gilbert and Violet sitting at a desk, each one engrossed in their own work.
"Hey Y/N, where have you been? I didn't see you at dinner," Gilbert asked, concerned. "Violet told me you were with the General. Did something happen?"
"Actually, that's why I'm here," Y/N said, turning to Gilbert. He gestured for Violet to wait outside. Gilbert's expression turned into a concerned look.
"Yes, Sir," Violet said, saluting before heading outside to wait for the two men.
Y/N took a seat, pointing to the chair Violet had occupied moments before. Gilbert nodded, indicating his approval.
"So, what's going on?" Gilbert asked, lowering his voice to ensure no one outside could hear them.
The room fell into silence as Y/N paused, contemplating his next words. After a moment, he spoke with a heavy tone. "I need you to take care of Violet from now on."
"What? Are you okay?" Gilbert asked, his confusion evident.
"I'm being transferred to a new unit. I'll be gone by morning," Y/N said, looking down at the table.
"They are sending us into enemy territory. I don't know how long I'll be gone," the Captain explained before Gilbert had a chance to ask.
Gilbert's eyes widened in realisation. "Is it about our plan on the attack on Intense?"
The Captain chuckled at his friend's quick deduction. "Yeah. But that plan is our last resort," he clarified. "They'll send about a dozen of us into the Gardarik Empire to infiltrate and gather information about their headquarters, like blueprints and whatnot."
"You realize that it's suicide, right? You won't make a few more steps before you're shot," Gilbert stated, concern etched on his face.
"And so is attacking Intense head-on," Y/N said. "We need more information about Intense, or we'll never make it through their defences."
"What, so you're going to jump right into enemy territory? Have you even thought about this? And what are the chances you'll make it back?" Gilbert asked, his voice rising to a whispered yell.
"Look Gilbert, I know both plans aren't good, but there are always sacrifices for victory. Someone has to make them."
"I won't let you," Gilbert said, his voice filled with determination.
"It's not up to you," Y/N said, standing up.
"So then, you're just going to get yourself and your team killed," Gilbert said angrily.
Y/N sighed, looking back at Gilbert. "You don't understand what's at risk here. If I do this, tens of thousands of young men don't have to die, and I don't see an alternative."
