"Detention!"
Startled heads snapped up in their direction as the room went dead silent. "Excuse me?" A messily-curled head replied.
"You heard me, off you go. You three are dismissed. Go to your head of house, she can deal with you." yelled Professor Flitwick, who was grumpy from the class of previous sixth years who were learning their aguamenti charms. He had been repeatedly sprayed in the face with ice cold jets of water.
"Fine, have fun without us," the Gryffindor replied, picking up his bag and exiting the room, followed by two noticeably quieter footsteps.
"Dismissed? The hell for? This is a new boy, dismissed and given detention for doing charm work, in a charms lesson. Honestly, what's next?" James said, rolling his eyes and hauling open McGonagall's office door.
She was obviously expecting them because she was sitting at her desk with four mugs of steaming tea and an open silver tin of biscuits. "What did you do this time then?" She sighed exasperatedly, taking a sip from a mug which James noted was the one he'd transfigured years ago in his first year. He had the impression that they all either vanished or were simply reused by the next class to transfigure. McGonagall caught him glancing at the mug and the corner of her lips momentarily twitched upwards.
"In our defence Minnie, it wasn't our fault. I swear. We were doing charms in the classroom, the charms classroom may I add. All of a sudden Flitwick turned around and started shouting at us, dismissed us, gave us detention, then sent us to you," he counted off his fingers. "So yeah, here we are," said Sirius, munching on a chocolate biscuit he had grabbed from the tin.
"Mister Lupin? Anything to add on the matter?" She questioned him.
"To be honest Professor, we actually were doing what we were meant to be doing." He shrugged, sipping his tea, emersed in its warmth.
"Well, it would be wise not to go back now. You can sit your detentions in here, since I have a free period. I suggest you quickly rush to the library, grab some books and do some reading for the next hour and a bit." They nodded and left the room. She could faintly hear Sirius Black shouting "the Library? where is that even?" She smiled at her favourite students' retreating backs and took a deep draught of her tea.
"Siriusly-" James stifled a snort, "where is the library? I've really never been there. Never had a reason to, any notes needed are from you Moony." Remus shook his head and pulled his loud friend roughly round a corner when he started to walk past the corridor that the library was located in.
James pushed open the thick wooden doors with a slight thud, making Madam Pince look up and stare at him, causing him to rub the back of his neck abashed.
"This place is huge!" Sirius's eyes widened.
"No kidding. Right, grab anything I guess, I'm going to the history section, we probably need to catch up on the subject since Binns has never and will never teach us anything other than hundreds of years old goblin wars."
Sirius, having no sense of direction in the unfamiliar territory decided to tail Remus around the vast room, yanking books off shelves every couple of seconds.
Once they had each grabbed an armful they headed back to McGonagall's office, grabbed a cushion each (they had brought them over for their last detention) and sat in the corner of her office which she had in the meantime vacated most likely to talk to Flitwick.
Sirius picked up a bulky looking book called Ancestral Enchantments: Unearthing the Legacy of Family Magic. He flicked through the pages, landing on one called The Lineage of England: A Study of Noble Lineages.
The four Hogwarts founders, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin's noble bloodline still grows today through multiple pure-blooded families, now traceable in half-bloods.
He skipped a few more pages, landing on one that mentioned royal claims and accusations of witchcraft.
1. In September 1419, Queen Joan of Navarre was accused of plotting to kill the king through witchcraft and sorcery.
His eyes continued to scan the page boredly.
3. Anne Boleyn, Queen of England as one of the six wives of King Henry VIII, has her portrait hanging on the Great-Staircase on the second floor of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Further down the section read:
Her nephew, Ophiuchus Black was the son of her brother, George Boleyn, Viscount Rochford and his first wife, Cordelia Black. He was considered illegitimate and was given his mother's surname, as well as the title Viscount of Huntingdonshire. George Boleyn was a pureblood, however his two sisters Mary And Anne are thought to be squibs, although there is some speculation as to whether Anne Boleyn possessed magic.
7. Edward Plantagenet, the supposed son of king Henry IV, was assumed dead shortly after he was born, but in reality he was secretly smuggled out of the country by his mother Mary de Bohun, a pure-blooded witch. He was really the son of Mary's childhood lover, Sir Huxley Peverall, a descendant of Ignotus Peverell. However, Henry didn't know this so it was assumed that Edward was the eldest child of Henry IV, who was at the time, Henry Boilingbroke, Earl of Northampton. She knew that Edward was a wizard and that he was technically the next in line for the English throne after her husband became king, so she sent him with a close unnamed friend to France, where he produced his own lineage throughout the next couple of centuries, later moving back into England once his heritage was unknown. Centuries later, when his line of succession had ended, The Plantagenet's, now married to the noble house of Potter, came out of hiding, now known across the country. Years later, Lord Hildred Potter was born.
At the sight of his and James's surnames, he carried on reading, intrigued.
