Maximilian Hoffmann has always been a disappointment to his parents. He knew they only saw him as a tool to benefit the family's business interest and secure their wealth. Although his privileged upbringing had endowed him with a strong education and fluency in multiple languages, the sixteen-year-old had no interest in following his parents' wishes. He was outspoken, and his jet black curls, brown eyes, and fair skin set him apart from the other boys of the German upper-class.
It seemed that Maximilian would never find a place where he belonged and be truly accepted, and he was determined to take matters into his own hands. After his parents announced their plans for him to marry the youngest daughter of a wealthy business partner, Maximilian decided he had had enough. Taking a few pieces of clothing and an old pocket watch, he snuck out late at night and ran into the darkness. No path to follow except for the gentle, warm light the hand-held candle that gave off a small glow to light his way.
