In a regular house on a regular street that was known as Spinner's end, a boy at the age of nine stared out the window. But unlike the house and the street, this boy was not regular. He was, in fact, a wizard, and he went by the name of Severus Snape.
He watched as some people across the street unpacked furniture and other belongings from a moving van. He caught a glimpse of one person carrying out what looked to be toys. Severus smiled as he imagined someone who is could play with. There weren't many kids in his neighborhood, and the ones who were thought he was weird and avoided him. Let the muggle children think what they wanted.
Although in many ways, he was weird. Severus did not go to school like the rest of the children. He was "homeschooled", which was just a coverup. In two years he would be off to Hogwarts to start his education as a wizard. His lack of social experience made him noticeably awkward. Severus's gangly limbs and greasy black hair made him look the part of an outsider too.
Still, every child longed for companionship, and Severus was no exception. He often found himself daydreaming up the perfect friend or playing with his pretend mates. The faux company never truly satisfied him.
He drew his attention back to the commotion across the street. Severus thought about possible ways to introduce himself to the new kid. That person was not yet exposed to his strangeness, so surely he or she wouldn't shy away from him at first, right? To Severus, this meant a potential friend. He started to calculate how to get him or her before the stories about him reached their ears. His thoughts were interrupted when he caught sight of not one, but two girls getting out of a dark blue minivan.
The girls' facial structure, body shape, and skin tone made them immediately distinguishable as sisters.
The first girl that got out of the car looked to be about a year or two older than the younger sister. She had dark brown hair that was almost black, and her piercing blue eyes looked like they could bend anyone's will into doing whatever she demanded by only a short stare down. Even in her youth, she had chiseled cheekbones and other sharp features that made the girl look more menacing. Severus did not think that this girl would be the type of friend he was looking for, let alone consider being his friend at all.
The second, younger girl had softer features. Her face still retained much of her baby fat. She had lighter brown hair that almost appeared red in the light. Her eyes were a forest green hue, and an array of freckles spread themselves out across the bridge of her nose. Moreover there was something else about her that made Severus's stomach whir. It instantly attracted him to her, and with that, he just knew he had to meet her right away. Screw coming up with an excuse. With that, he sprinted out the front door, stopping only for a short second to look in the mirror to check if he was presentable.
Once outside, Severus slowed his pace. He didn't want to appear too upfront, for that might scare her away. He tried to mimic the calm movements he saw cool guys do when walking. He ended up tripping over his own feet and just managed to balance himself before he fell. Severus kept walking and tried to convince himself that the giggle he just heard did not come from the girls.
Once he approached the sisters, he tried manage a smile. It came out as a lopsided, semi-grin. The older girl gave him a glare that made his smile receded and caused him to slightly cringe, but the younger girl stared back at him with her deep green eyes politely. Latching onto her friendliness, he found the courage to utter his first sentence.
"H-hi. My name is Severus Snape," he stuttered nervously.
The girl smiled in reply and responded, "I'm Lily. Lily Evans."
And it was on that day that they became the best of friends.
