~~~Madison's POV~~~
One year earlier (summer flashback)
"You coming or not!" I yelled over the sound of my four wheeler. Alex was still trying to get his started, his brother probably messed with it again. "Almost got it.." he answered. A few minutes later, the engine to his four wheeler rumbled to life. He swung his leg over and pushed the gear, riding closer to me. "It's about time" I teased. He just smirked at me and we were flying over hills and mud puddles.
We always went mudding after our chores were finished. Alex and I had always been really close, we tell each other everything, and its like having a sort of big brother to look out for you. I was secretly starting to see him more than like that. We'd grown up together and i hated being apart from him for to long. As we rode our four wheelers back into the shed, we left a trail of mud from the direction we came. My shorts and ripped tee shirt were covered in mud. I glanced at Alex and just started giggling. He looked at me like I was insane, and then he stared at the mud all over my clothes and he started laughing too. In only a few moments we were both in a fit of giggles. "You look a little muddy " I teased. "I look muddy?! have you seen yourself??" He laughed throwing me over his shoulder.
A while later we settled down and sat out watching the sun go down. I saw Alex's brother, Jonathon's ford truck speeding up the dirt road leading to the house. He lost control of the truck and went barreling to our fence crushing anything in its surroundings. A lot of our crops were crushed and there was a large gap in the fence. The truck screeched to a stop as Alex and I started sprinting to the truck. As we got to the scene my siblings had witnessed what had happened and had gone inside to get my parents.
We swung open the door, and Jonathon looked at us with a small gash in the side of his head, he was bleeding but it didn't seem as serious as we'd thought. By the time we could get Jonathon out of the truck and away from the car, both Alex and my family were out yelling at each other. I went inside quickly to get a first aid kit and came back out to treat the gash in his head. I heard bits and pieces of their conversation. "This is your fault!" "Our fault?!" "If you hadn't had your fence so close to the road!" "Your boy is the one who hit OUR fence!"
"PLEASE! Just stop!" I yelled to where everyone turned and looked at me. I was still treating Johnathon's wounds. My father gathered us kids up, and had a small "meeting" with us. "After they have our fence fixed, I don't want any of you to communicate with the Vickers." My father explained. "Dad! I'm not doing that." I told him firmly. He turned to me and said, "You will do as I say, I am your father!" "Not if my father is making MY decisions!" I raised my voice even louder. "Walk into that house right now, and don't come back out until you are instructed to." My father said through gritted teeth. I completely ignored him and walked over to Jonathon to bandage his head.
Alex came over to join me, carefully eyeing my fathers reaction. I refused to go inside, what he had said was completely unfair. It is not his decision as to whether or not I hang out with the Vickers or not. Just because he hates them doesn't mean I have to. "Madison Dawn Stephens!" My father yelled while I completely ignored him. "You should probably listen to your dad.." Alex whispered to where only I could hear it. So I finished cleaning up Jonathon, told Alex to text me, then went inside, still ignoring my fathers ranting.
