The next day, Xander picked me up at my house for our lunch date. I was excited and nervous, especially because I'd never gone out with anyone before. As soon as I heard the knock on the door, my heart raced. You can do this, Allie. It's just a date with one of your best friends, who you've been crushing on since sixth grade. What could go wrong? I walked up to the door and pulled it open. Xander was standing right outside, wearing jeans, a button-up shirt, and a light jacket.
"Hey, Allie. I heard you like roses." He held out a single, red rose to me with a warm smile on his face. I bit my lip as I grinned and took the rose from him.
"Thanks, Xander. This is beautiful." I took a quick whiff of the flower before my dad pulled it out of my hand.
"I'll take care of this for you. You two kids go on and have fun." I giggled awkwardly as Xander led me out to his car. He opened my door for me and helped me get in.
"Thanks, Xander." As soon as we were both buckled in, Xander drove us to the Thames Waterside Bar and Grill. We found a place to park and went inside the restaurant.
"So...what'd you think of my music last night?" Xander asked. I smiled as I leaned forward.
"I thought you did a really good job. Though I'm not really sure how you can go wrong with pop/rock." I winked at him as our waitress came back with our drinks. Xander's cheeks turned slightly pink as he smiled back.
"I guess I'll have to write more pop/rock songs, then. Maybe one about a certain girl." I bit my lip as I smiled a little more.
"Do I know her?" I teased.
"Oh, definitely not. She's this cute, smart, generous, kind blond from my school," he answered in a playful tone.
"Sounds like someone I'd get along with." Xander chuckled.
"Without question."
After we finished lunch, we walked along the Mount Hope Bay together. As we walked, I saw a flash of movement coming in our direction on the mostly empty street. Is that...? I glanced at Xander and he didn't even seem to notice the movement. I subtly waved my hand, focusing on creating a patch of ice for the criminal I'd seen at BankFive to slip on. Right as we passed each other, the criminal slipped and fell, skidding to a stop nearby.
"Whoa. What the hell? Who is that?" Xander asked. I shook my head as we froze on the sidewalk.
"I don't know."
As the person fell, they dropped a bag, which seemed to have money in it. I instantly realized the criminal was a woman who wore a mask that covered her eyes. She stood up and looked around, searching for the source of the ice. Her eyes landed on Xander and me, glaring coldly at us.
"Allie...we should get out of here," Xander said, gently tugging my arm.
I nodded slowly and started to let him pull me down the street. As we walked away, the woman zipped off, leaving the bag behind. I saw several police cars skid to a stop near the bag before the officers got out and began collecting the money on the ground.
Later on, after my date with Xander, I was home alone since my dad had been called into work. I was working on some homework due the next day, Monday, when I heard something outside. I cautiously started toward the front door, trying to listen for any other sounds. I got to the front door and heard total silence. Am I just being paranoid? Then I heard a loud bang from my backyard. I whirled around and zipped over to my back door. As soon as I was in sight of the window of the door, I froze. The bank robber from earlier was standing in my backyard. I cautiously walked out with my hands raised in front of me. The woman snorted and crossed her arms.
"Put those hands down, little girl, unless you know how to use them."
"I'm sure I can figure it out pretty quickly. Who the hell are you? And why are you in my backyard?" I snapped. The woman paused for a moment, clearly thinking. When she spoke, her voice was low and a little intimidating.
"Call me Teleporter." She shrugged as she continued. "People think I'm teleporting when I run around anyway. Why not give them a little bit of misdirection?" I scoffed.
"But you're lying to them. That's not your real name and it's not your ability. You run significantly faster than the typical human can see." Teleporter sneered at me.
"Very good. Someone clearly paid attention in science class."
"And math class," I added, in a snarky tone. Teleporter sighed.
"Look, I know who are you, Allie Price. Stay out of my way and your secret stays a secret from my boss. For now."
