Desolation

 Pairing, Ichigo x Rukia 

Rukia was not having a good day in the slightest, it was supposed to be her wedding anniversary to the lieutenant of squad six Abarai Renji but one thing bad after another kept happening. Half of her entire division were forced to be in the human world as thousands and thousands of hollows invaded from Hueco Mundo. More and more had been flooding in over the past few years, at first it was a few, then dozens became hundreds and hundreds became thousands. The substitute shinigami Ichigo Kurosaki was nowhere to be found, nobody had seen him in five years like he had dropped off the face of the earth. He wasn't in soul society, in the Soul King's realm or the human world, it was like he vanished completely. Renji and Byakuya had both been deployed to the human world for damage control leaving Rukia and her two lieutenants in the soul society. Her thoughts on the matter are interrupted when she hears a knock at the door to her office. The long haired woman walks over to the shoji door before sliding them open revealing the last person she expected to see.

"Inoue?" She questions, seeing the orange haired woman standing in front of her office door. "What are you doing here?" She asks, though she's happy to see her friend again she wishes it was under better circumstances.

"It's... important." Orihime says, her voice trembling slightly laced with worry. "C-can I come in?" She asks, the shorter woman obliges and steps aside allowing Orihime to enter her office.

"Are you ok? What's wrong?" Rukia asks, offering her friend to take a seat on one of the sofas in her office. Orihime steps slowly to one of the chairs before falling into it. The veil she wore regarding her concerns and feelings falling away as she breaks down and begins to cry.

"I-it's Ichigo..." She says, as tears fall from her eyes. "He hasn't come back... not since we got the invitation to your wedding. I felt it, his reishi turned cold and then he hollowfied." Rukia's skin crawls when she hears the news that Ichigo gave into his inner hollow. "I heard him screaming... then he was gone. The sky turned black when he ripped a garganta open and left... he is in Hueco Mundo."

"Why? Why did he go there?" Rukia asks, grabbing Orihime's hands and holding them in her lap, trying her best to console her. "Has he been there this whole time?" Orihime nods when she asks this, covering her face in her hands and crying. "Why did he leave? Why did he hollowfy?"

"I don't know..." Orihime responds though her shaky voice is barely audible.

"Kiyone! Sentaro! Get in here!" Rukia yells, the two troublesome lieutenants rush into the office to find their captain seated beside Orihime trying to console the broken woman. "Go get Mayuri, I need a garganta to Hueco Mundo. Kurosaki Ichigo has been located." The two nod before immediately running off to the twelfth division barracks not too far away from her squad's own barracks.

Why was he gone? Why did he leave? Was it something that happened in the world of the living? Did he lose to his hollow? Questions like these echoed through Rukia's mind as she waited patiently for the captain of squad twelve to answer her request. The sleazy mad scientist rarely answered any requests, even from other captains and oftentimes would forgo going to captain meetings entirely, finding them a waste of time. The last meeting he went to, Head Captain Kyoraku brought up that Kurosaki Ichigo had vanished from the world of the living, and Mayuri left shortly after. To her surprise however, she got a hell butterfly from the scientist, "I'll bring it to the hidden facility under the mountain. I have a feeling he is the one that has been interrupting my experiments. The sooner you put a stop to this the better so I can get back to work." He was rude, as always but had agreed to create the garganta so that she can cross realms.

When her lieutenants returned, Rukia instructed them to stay with Orihime and give her anything she needed. This mission to Hueco Mundo will be black ops and only the five of them, including Mayuri, would know that Rukia had ventured to the forbidden sands of the hollow desert. Grabbing a long scarf that could be wrapped around her entire head, she ties her sword to her hip and exits her office. With a subtle step forwards she vanishes using the flash step technique as fast as she can to get to the old training ground where Ichigo himself had attained Bankai. She arrived just as Mayuri and his goons from the research and development division pushed the massive machine into the opening of the cave. The two captains said nothing to each other, just a curt nod from Rukia greeting the mad scientist said everything that needed to be said. Mayuri pressed a single button on a hand held remote causing the machine to draw in reishi from the air before distorting the area above the platform. A black zipper like void manifested in the air peeling back the fabric of reality revealing the dark void of the precipice world. She didn't hesitate, flash stepping into the void that closed behind her as she entered it.
