53 | Night at Wayne Manor

"Without warning, it comes... crashing through the window of your study, and mine... I have seen it before... somewhere. It frightened me as a boy... frightened me. Yes, father. I shall become a bat". - Batman: Year One

Dinner was pizza, which Lilith had delivered from Luccio's. Bruce asked her not to choose the pineapple one like his father once had, so she asked for the original cheese pizza. Although it was his favorite, Bruce didn't eat more than one slice. Lilith ate two and saved the remaining slice in the kitchen for later.

"Lilith, thank you for all your help, but seriously, you can go home," Bruce told her after he checked the time. They had finished eating and were sat back in front of the TV watching old tv shows. "I don't want to be a burden. I will be okay".

"Bruce, you aren't a burden," Lilith told him right away. "I don't want to ever hear you say that again". The boy nodded and she planted a kiss on his forehead. "Now, I'm going to the bathroom and when I come back, I want you ready for bed".

As Lilith said, she went to the bathroom and then proceeded to check if every window in the Manor was closed. When she was on her way back, Lilith heard the sound of glass shattering followed by Bruce shouting her name.

"Lilith!" He called again with panic in his voice.

Her heart was racing loudly inside her chest as she ran the rest of the way. "Bruce!" She found the boy, already in his light blue pajama, by the couch. His eyes were wide open as he looked at something in the upper corner by the windows. Lilith could hear flapping noises coming from that direction and she followed his gaze.

A bat.

"It just broke through the window," Bruce told as Lilith joined his side. He held on to her clothes as if his life depended on it.

"It's okay, Bruce, it won't hurt you," Lilith reassured as she placed herself in between the boy and the bat. The latter let out loud clithering noises as it desperately tried to find a way out near where he had first came in. "It's just scared".

Bruce nodded, peeking from around Lilith, not being able to tear his eyes away from the animal.

"Now, I need you to dim the lights after I open the window. Can you do that for me?" She asked softly and Bruce hesitantly let go of her. "Move quietly".

Doing as Lilith instructed, Bruce moved slowly to the other end of the room where the lightswitch was and waited for Lilith to open the window doors. The breeze played with the curtains and Lilith grabbed one, pulling it aside, so the bat could find the way out easier.

It took the animal a few minutes, but it finally found its way back into the night, fluttering its wings under the moonlight as it disappeared.

Lilith looked over at Bruce who was by the entrance of the study still trembling but sighing with relief.
