There we were 12 years old and not a care in the world. Denise and I just were sitting in my attic “So how long are you gonna stare at me before you say something?” “Well if you would just blink already and let me win we can move on with life…”  "Not gone happen Don Don." I hated when she called me that it was short for Brandon but what could I do she is the ONLY one that can do that. I accepted her challenge up until she squinted. “AH HA!! You’re gonna cave in I know it you’re gonna” SHIT! I blinked. “HA! Who’s doing what again? I win I win uh huh uh huh!” I swear every time she wins she has this stupid victory dance. And since I can never beat her I see it a lot. So much I can do the dance in my sleep. “Yea keep on dancing one day I WILL beat you at something” “Fine wanna arm wrestle?”

(Five Years Later)

“Oh don’t worry about it Don Don you will get it” “No! This isn’t fair. Why can’t I just be like you. You’re great at, well, everything” “Don this ain’t no race! You’ll get your driver’s license when the time is right” “Psh Yea okay.” Denise is my best friend and, also the reason why I am so competitive since we were about five years old when we just met. She lived across the street from me and because she wasn’t girly like most of the other girls I knew we became best friends instantly. She was from the south and traveled there often between her parents so sometimes I’d miss her over the summer but count down the days until she left when we were at school. We’ve been best friends for 12 years now and still going strong. None of that “falling in love with your bestie” bullshit. And I loved her more than everything she was my best friend and my sister. But soon we were going to be separated by the C word. That is if I don’t get into this school. And you’re probably thinking “so what you’re young you’ll find new friends in college” but you just don’t understand a friendship this good is hard to find.

“Okay so you know I honestly don’t give a damn but the blue dress or the red dress?” I had to look at her for good minutes to really make sure she just asked me that ridiculous question “Ness you really asking a man bout dresses?” “Well how about this which one do you picture yourself pealin off that fine caramel honey you always eyesin in chem” she giggled a little, something I’ve been dying to hear all day“Really? REALLY NESS?” I picked her up playfully and kissed her neck. Don’t worry this is how we play nothing sexual. “Well, I think I like the red dress. The blue says “look at me I’m a virgin” but the red says “GET IN MY VAG” Yea get that one” She looked at me shocked and gave a good one in my stomach “You asshole!” she laughed. It was moments like these I live for. “So did you find vag yet for prom?” no Nessy I did not! Why you ask because there is no girl worthy enough for this fine brotha to take out in public. She would have my head for that answer so I just settled with “Naw, I think I’ll just go solo” “Oh Don you so damn boring bro!” “Yea well how about you? Who you taking ugly?” “Well…” she didn’t even have to say it the look on her face confirmed that she got the hottie she wanted. “AH so you asked him finally?” “Well no but”- “What the hell Ness you’re gorgeous just do it already”

I swear the way Brandon talks to me sometimes it’s like he likes me ya know. I ain’t tryna say he ain’t fine because believe you me he is definitely on my top five. BUT! He is my best friend so nothing more than that. But that don’t mean I be seeing those fast hoochies giving him “the look” every time they pass by at lunch. Don Don and I have been friends ever since I moved out here to New York. I lived in Brooklyn in an apartment next door to him. And I hated these girly girls out here they ain’t never want to get dirty so I guess being friends with a guy made a ton a sense. Anyway after being friends for so long I never thought anything of his looks or nothing I just let it go over my head. After this summer with my dad for some reason I came back and bam! Brandon done grew and his voice got even deeper and he perfected his lil bit a swag he had. But daddy told me not to focus on any boys for right now because I had to focus on the music. “Don Don you think you can take me to rehearsal after this? I mean you got the nice ass car and all dat” “Tuh you really gonna go there huh?” “Oh I’m sorry strike a nerve cry baby?” “Yea iight you can walk there yourself then” “Okay Okay! I’m sorry Don you know I’m just foolin” “Yea and foolin gets you in trouble little girl” Oh he went there today he must have forgotten who keeps picking him up after work “Lil girl? Oh boy you done did it now” The smirk on his face told me all I needed to know “So what’s the challenge LITTLE GIRL” “Keep playing like you don’t know who I am. I’ll take you down in this dress store” “Well that wouldn’t be lady like now would it Denise?” I turned around to find the face of that beautiful voice “O-oh… h-hi D-darnel” there I was as usual stuttering in front of the quarterback. “Whatcha d-doin h-here?” “OH nothing just looking around” In a dress store? The fuck? “I-in a dress store” way to go dummy maybe in the next sentence you won’t stutter at all.

I hate seeing her act like that in front of him. He’s not even all that. Try being captain of the basketball team. Football ain’t shit. He need to get on my level. “Yo Darnel wassup man” “Aye Brandon The Don wassup playa” “Eh you know chillin” And hoping that you would find the nearest exit and frolic to it. “Yea man I feel you. Well uh hit me up later Brandon. We still got that one on one later?” “Yea man no doubt” “Until next time Denise?” He winked at her and then went right out the door. What an asshole. He even had her wrapped up because her eyes really followed him out the damn door. “SO!” I shouted startling her right out that wet dream “Rehearsal right?”
