I was sitting on the floor of the living room with my feet curled beneath me. The house was dark. I saw her pulling her car into the driveway. When she walked through the front door, she didn't notice me right away. She crosses the living room, heading for the bedroom, which leads to the bathroom. I heard the shower running. After a few minutes, she came out of the bathroom wearing a towel around her neck. Water dripping from her wet hair. Oh, I forgot how good she looks. Always making me forget to breathe. She was almost in the kitchen when she finally noticed me. Our eyes locked. She's probably wondering what I'm doing sitting in the dark. Alone. We held each other's stare for a while. "What's her name?" I broke the silence. I somehow managed to ask the question without it sounding spiteful. She didn't answer; instead, she looked away. She made her way towards the fridge. Opened it and got herself a bottle of water. She opened the bottle, took a sip,put it back where it belonged, and closed the fridge. The silence between us was killing me. I somehow stood up. Then she looked me right in the eye and said, "Ruth, her name is Ruth." As soon as her name fell from her lips completely, she looked away. My knees met the floor, but she wasn't there to catch me. As soon as she said her name, she left her room. I wanted to cry and scream. But no words left my mouth. No tears came out. I stared blankly into the space while my heart broke into pieces. I felt my stomach turn, like I might be physically sick. When she emerged from the hallway, she was holding her suitcase. She gave me one last look. Then she walked towards the front door. It took everything in me not to run after her and beg her to stay. I wanted to chase her and tell her to tell me that there was no her,it was all a prank, and then I'd believe her with my whole heart. She didn't turn back. She left. She left me. She left like there was never a reason to stay. I guess our story ends here.
