Being a wrestling girlfriend wasn't easy, and least of all for the faint of heart. Especially when you weren't involved in the business, which I never wanted to be.
Meeting Phil was a shock. I didn't know who he was. All I knew that was there are firecrackers behind his eyes. Sometimes they want to watch the world explode from the inside out and others they shine brighter as every good thing happens. That. That is what drew me in. Not the dark hair and the tattoos, not the lip piercing that he loved to play with. His energy. The way he saw the world.
Over the last six years, I had seen him truly lose and rebuild faith in it. From thinking it was over and he would never bounce back to being given the biggest opportunity to date. I knew he appreciated it and loved every second, but I missed him. I missed the walks through the city. I missed morning coffee and bagels. Luckily AEW didn't take him away nearly as much as WWE had, but it was still two to three days a week.
"Your birthday is Saturday." I heard the smile in his voice.
"It is?" I smiled back at him.
"What if you came with me this weekend?"
"Why so I can sit in the back and be miserable?"
"No, this weekend will be different. I promise." He didn't promise something unless he meant it, so I wondered what he was planning.Waiting around for Friday made everything feel impossible. Work drug on for hours and hours, days were months long. Finally it was time to head to the airport. Collision was in Ontario so there's no way he wasn't working, I was just excited to see what and if he had planned anything. I packed light, but I packed three going out outfits too, just in case.
Arriving at O'Hare had become more of thing recently. People started coming up for pictures and autographs again, people wanted to know what was happening backstage. He was always respectful as long as they were and did his best to stay calm. He pretended it was a chore after, but I knew deep down he loved it more than anything.
Once we boarded he turned and looked at me, "I hope this is the best birthday you have ever had." He kissed my hand softly, running his fingers across mine. "I love you, you know that?"
"I always have." I kissed his hand and settled in for the flight.Arriving at the venue was a whole nother thing, but it was faster than the airport. Eventually, we were settled and with our friends backstage. The usual preshow bullshit went back and forth until it was time for the best episode of Collision so far. "Shit, I'm starting the show. Gotta go." He kissed me quickly and ran to guerrilla. I followed behind him, eager to watch him do what he does best on the microphone. Cult of Personality played and the entire place went crazy. He had built a strong reputation here, even stronger by being able to publicly support Owen and Martha. I couldn't help but to smile as he smirked into the camera, tapped his wrist and yelled his signature "IT'S CLOBBERING TIME,"
The ring was set up with black carpeting and a golden stand with champagne. He never told me what he was going to do when he got in the ring, and this didn't seem to fit with any of the current stories. "Ontario! You know, I've spent the majority of my life being a professional wrestler and showing everyone just how good I truly fucking am, but today...that's not what today is about. Today is about the man I am outside of this ring, the man I am when I go home to my dog and my beautiful woman. Baby, I know this is my world, not yours. But I can't tell you how lucky I am to share it with you. Will you please come join me in the ring?" I smiled and said aw to myself, then remembered he was talking to me. He was talking to me. He was waiting in the ring for me. Somehow I floated my way out and the echos of cheers roared in my ears. He waited with the ropes parted for me to step in.
"What are you doing?" I laughed.
"Something I should have done so long ago. What'd you say we do this thing forever? Will you marry me?" I heard the question but my brain still couldn't register any of this was real. He dropped to one knee and pulled out a pearl ring with a braided band. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
"Yes, a million times yes." I cried, dropping to my knees to wrap my arms around him. "There is no timeline where I'd say no." I kissed him deeply and he slipped the ring on my finger.
"Oh, it's also her birthday." He laughed into the mic. The crowd went wild and again blew up with "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" chants.I looked at him, under the lights that made him truly glow and I knew there was no man I'd rather spend my life with.
