Nicole's POV
The sand underneath my toes felt good as I walked along the ocean shore. It was sunset, my favorite time of the day. Today was my last day of vacation before college started. I bent down to pick up a shell and examined it carefully, checking for any beautiful designs. I pressed it to my ear and listened for the sound of the ocean. Sitting down on one of the lawn chairs I had brought along, I picked up my book that I had left on the ground and flipped through the pages. When I came upon the right page, I started reading.
I had always enjoyed relaxing by the ocean situated comfortably in a lawn chair with a book open in front of me. Home, I was considered a nerd. I was a bookworm and studied hard for tests. Because of this, I am going to Stanford University. I had lived in a little town in Ohio, but because of college purposes, and my parents' jobs, we moved to California. In public, I was more of a girly girl. My parents were rich, boys called me "irresistible" and my social circle was about the same as me. Though I had never wanted it that way. I had wanted to be a normal girl, not someone that is constantly changing their looks to impress someone else. I wanted to be myself for a change.
I closed my book and ran my hand through my shoulder length brown hair trying to get some of the knots out. Frustrated that it wasn't working, I walked home promising myself that I would take a shower immediately when I got home.
I unlocked the door and threw my keys onto the coffee table hoping they wouldn't miss. I got into the bathroom and quickly stripped myself of my clothing which was getting uncomfortably sticky with sweat. Stepping into the shower, I let the jets of water pound onto my back before getting squeezing a generous amount of shampoo into my hands. The constant pounding of the water relaxed my muscles as I had been tense all day. I massaged the shampoo into my hair and rinsed it out watching the soap go down the drain. I closed my eyes drifting from reality to fantasy as I recalled the events from the previous months.
~flashback~
"Mom, can I go out with a friend?" I asked.
"No, honey. You need to study for your SAT, ACT and the exams! You know how important they are!" she replied.
"Fine," I sighed.
I trudged up to my bedroom and slumped onto my bed taking out my phone and texting my friend Jessica.
[srry.... I can't go to the movies with you and Mabel tonight....maybe some other time after all my tests are over?] I offered.
[girl, this has been the 5th time tht you have refused our offers of going to the movies..... I love ur mom and all but..... Sometimes shes a bit strict ya know.....]
[i know... Well gotta go study.. Ttyl :)]
I plugged my phone into the charger and sat down at my desk. I got out my 3in binder full of things my mother had put together for me that I needed to study and skimmed through the pages. The SAT was the day after tomorrow, the ACT was sometime soon and my end of the year exams were coming up as well. After at least 3 hours of non-stop studying, I skipped down the stairs proud of my progress.
My mom had stopped making dinner after a while since she was so busy working. She works from home and got a decent, or plentiful amount of cash from this job which would be enough to sustain our family, even without my dad's income.
I grabbed some instant macaroni and cheese from the cupboard, added water to it, and stuck it into the microwave. I set it for the required time and went to pour myself some milk and get a fork. The microwave beeped and I got out my steaming macaroni. I almost dropped it as I hadn't realized how hot the container was.
After my quick "dinner" I went back upstairs and continued on with my studying.

Today was the day. The day I would get my acceptance letters from the few colleges I had decided to enroll in. I had gotten my exam scores, ACT and SAT scores a while back, and if I do say so myself, they were pretty good.
I fumbled with my pen as I waited impatiently by my front door waiting for the mailman. Then he came. The mailman slowly walked up the steps of our front door and put the mail into the little container.
As soon as the mailman left, I rushed out the door and snatched the mail. I quickly searched through them looking for the acceptance letters. Or the denial letters.
I found them and quickly tore open the first one I had come across. Living in the state of Ohio, I had chosen Ohio state university as a choice. They had accepted and were willing to give me a scholarship of 5,000 dollars. I was happy but quickly looked through my stack searching for the one I had been waiting for. Finally I found it. With trembling hands, I tore open the envelope. It read STANFORD in fancy letters at the top of the page. I read through it slowly and jumped up with joy that I was accepted and given a scholarship for my four years there. I ran upstairs to my mom's office forgetting about the other letters that weren't important to me anymore.
My mom was happy and we rejoiced. I asked my mom if we could call up Dad and celebrate by going out to eat. She quickly dismissed the idea simply stating that I needed to study some more for no apparent reason and that she and Dad needed to work. I guess that's how my family was. Working was always more important than having fun, after you accomplished one task, it was time to start another one. I was disappointed by my mother's answer but brushed it off as I was expecting something similar to what she had said.
I laid down on my bed and took out my phone. Things were looking good for me so far.
~ end of flashback~
I got out of the shower and looked at the time. I had almost been in there for an hour. I quickly got some pajamas on and slipped under my covers, not ready for the day tomorrow.
I got out my phone and looked through my contacts for someone to text. After all, it was only 9:00 pm.
I decided on texting my friend Jessica who was still in Ohio. We had grown apart over the past month but I was still hoping to be able to be good friends with her. She didn't reply to my first text so I assumed she was sleeping. It was 12:00 pm there. After realizing that she wasn't going to text back, I sighed and closed my eyes trying to sleep.
