The welcome sign at the front of the empty town had rusted and was barely legible. "Swanson, Ohio". I scanned the area for anything that would make a story. This place had to been abandoned for some reason. All I saw was shops and houses covered in tangled of vines and probably infested with rats and bugs.
2o Oak Avenue was what my boss put in my 'possible leads' envelope. A group of teens went in and never came out. All the search parties sent out vanished as well. Seems good a place as any to start. The van screeched to a halt at the 'driveway' of the house. Looked like it could've collapsed at any second. The stairs that led up to the foyer were full chips and dents. Cautiously, I opened the door.
"You're alone?" A voice asked.
"Who are you? Sorry, I thought this place was empty." I apologized.
"No, sweetie it's fine. I've been rather lonely without company. Not a fan of big groups though."
"Where are you? You don't have to hide."
A hideous creature came out from the top of the staircase. It had smooth skin with patches of hair springing up and some sort of antlers sticking out of its oval shaped head.
"Sorry to have frightened you." It cast its head down.
"What are you?"
"It's a tragic story that involves my daughter, her friends, World War III, and diamonds."
Ignoring the response I pressed on with questions,"Were you human?"
"Yes,I prefer this though. I've crafted the most effective DNA for survival ever. I'm immortal but it's not much when everything around here is dead."
"Can I get a holo?"
I could tell it was confused, what with his black eyes squinting and his nonexistent eyebrow raised.
"It's like a 3D picture." I explained.
" Oh no, I don't want anyone to see me. This is the most interaction I've had with another person in what seems like forever." The poor guy went behind the door again.
"Oh ok then, bye." My shoes clicked as I headed to the door. Leaving the biggest story I've every gotten behind.
"Wait!" It shouted. Its voice cracked and altered pitch."Please. Stay."
And I did.
