The deafening silence filling the car was almost too much to bear as Alaric sped through the forest of my old pack. The tension had been surrounding us since we were on the plane, especially with what Pilph told us the day before. My eyes drew themselves to Alaric's covered neck under a black turtleneck. There was an uneasy feeling in my stomach with the knowledge of him not bearing my mark.
"Do you want children?"
I blinked at the sudden question, my eyes meeting his as he turned to look at me. My mind flashed back to the painting, a warmth filling my chest as I remembered the three pups. Why was he bringing this up all of a sudden?
"This was the discussion I wanted to have with you yesterday," he stated.
My eyebrows raised involuntarily as it dawned on me that we never had that discussion. I'm guessing because of how emotional I got on our way home. The entire evening, he stayed home with me and we prepped for today's dreaded trip.
"So," he pushed, "Do you?"
"Yes," I finally answer, "I do. I've always wanted kids."
I turned my attention back to the trees gulping as the clearing approached. What will Sword of Hera think when they see me bearing another Alpha's mark? What will my parents think?
"Do-Do you want children with me?"
I snapped my head in his direction, eyes wide as I processed his question. I furrowed my eyebrows and my lips pulled downward into a frown, "Who else would I have kids with, Alaric? You're my mate."
"But you haven't marked me," he said monotonously, "You haven't even asked to."
He parked the car, suddenly, prompting me to look out the window. We're here, we've arrived at Sword of Hera. I instinctively grabbed my mate's hand and breathed out as my lungs constricted and my heart pounded violently in my chest.
"If you wanted me to mark you, you should have said so," I mumbled distractedly.
Sparks ignited on the side of my face and my head was turned until I met red, fiery eyes glaring at me intensely. Alaric silently placed a chaste kiss on my lips and rubbed his thumb in a circular motion, soothing my nerves. My eyelids fluttered close as my breathing evened out and my heart pounded faster, this time for another reason.
"I want you to mark me," he whispered against my lips, "Let's get this over with quickly so you can do just that."
He pulled away and I opened my eyes to find him already out of the car, opening my door for me. He must have teleported because I didn't hear his door open or close. I unbuckled my seat belt as I listened to the loud chattering of my old pack and grabbed the hand he held out to me before stepping out of the vehicle.
When the morning sun hit my face, a hush fell over the pack. Jordan, who'd been trailing us, joined us as I closed the car door with a wry smile on his face.
