❝ ALWAYS THE FOOL ❞
➵ I N T R O D U C I N G
WHEN SYDNEY FORD WAS 5-YEARS-OLD, her father promised her the world. He claimed that no monster would ever get to her because he would defeat them; because she was his little girl, and he'd be damned if she wasn't safe with him. Even when Rebecca and A.J. came along, Sydney was her father's favorite—even though he would never admit it in front of her siblings, even though her mother disapproved of such a title, even though Sydney rebelled and acted out as she grew older. Before the end of the world, Sydney was promised protection—and in the world's dying days, she was promised death. Just . . . not her own.
WHEN SYDNEY FORD WAS 12-YEARS-OLD, she was pulled from her 6th grade English class, tossed in the back of her mother's family van, and taken in a rush to escape the awakened dead—the Walkers. People who had died and risen again, their only mission to devour the living. At 12-years-old, Syndey promises Rebecca and A.J. that they'll all survive; and at 13-years-old, a year into the end of the world, she watches her father attempt to kill himself over the deaths of his family, the deaths that he couldn't prevent—not realizing that Sydney is not among the bodies in the grass.
WHEN SYDNEY FORD WAS 13-YEARS-OLD, she laid flowers beside the family van before following her father deeper into the dead world, on a mission to restore humanity. She has hope—they've met a scientist now, a man who knows how to fix this. It may not bring back her mother and siblings, but it will bring back her faith. Eugene Porter may be on the weird side, and he may be hiding more than a few secrets—but aren't they all? Sydney's hiding a few of her own, too. She can't be hypocritical of a man who wants to keep his.
THE WORLD ENDED WHEN SYDNEY Ford was just a child. But she believes the world can begin again. She just needs to remember her father's promise, and she knows everything will be okay.
