"RUN! ROWAN RUN!"
I'm trying to keep up with my parents, holding onto my little brother's hand as we follow them into a dark alleyway.
"Mum! Dad!" I scream after them as I realise we've reached a dead end.
About a dozen of these creatures are after us, these zombies.

"Shit- what do we do" my dad is frantically looking around for a route to escape.
"Honey" my mum points towards a window from the building on our left, but the window is small enough to only fit me and my brother.
"Mum, the window is too small" I shake my head.
She gives no response, just smiling at me softly.

"Mum, dad, no" I shake my head, tears furiously forming in my eyes.
My brother begins crying, so I pick him up and try to comfort him by patting his back.
I get a sudden whiff of something that smells like rotten pennies mixed with blood, signalling that the zombies are getting closer. Their moans echo throughout the alleyway, they're obviously filled with starvation and they're not backing down.
"Hey! This way!" We all hear a man's voice from the other end of the alleyway, right behind the zombies. They all turn around towards the voice, they've found their new target.

Gunshots begin flying everywhere, and another man and women appear as they help out.
"Are you alright?" The man walks towards us. We're all standing in shock, my brother reaches a hand towards my sweater and tightens his grip on me.

"What just happened?" My mum speaks up.
"Don't worry, you guys are safe now" the man chuckles. He appears to be in his early thirties; he's really tall and towers over us, but his eyes and smile are both really warm and welcoming, making me feel less intimidated. The man then runs his huge, manly hand through his dark brown waves. "I'm Alexander, and this is-" he points towards the other two people with him, but the woman interrupts him.

"I'm Sandra, and this is my husband Adam. I'm glad you lot are safe" she smiles warmly. I take a notice of her confident stance, she's standing tall and proud, a hand placed onto her waist.
"I'm glad too" the man besides her, Adam, smiles gently at us. He seems to be more introverted and shy than his wife, but they both look really good together.

My father begins introducing us, but my brother begins to form another tantrum.
"Mommy! Are they going to kill us?"
"Awww sweetie, of course not" my mother pulls my brother away from my grasp and holds him in her arms instead. "Right?" She smiles at Alexander, but there's a slight hint of fear in her voice.
"Of course not!" Alexander in turn chuckles.
"So what are your stories? How did you end up in this situation?" Sandra asks, showing genuine interest in us.

"Well about 8 months ago, we found out about the virus that broke out in Europe." I start speaking, everyone's eyes are directly on me.
"I actually found out through my friend, Simon, but I've lost contact with him." I look out into the distance, my father reaches a hand out to me and begins stroking my back. A few tears start forming in my eyes, but I shake my head and continue.

"And obviously as you know, it's reached America. And just now, we were out looking for supplies when we were about to be bombarded by those... creatures."
"Remarkable. You guys have survived for so long." Sandra's eyes widen in surprise.
"Most of the population have been wiped out, and yet you all are still standing. I'm impressed." Alexander smiles and Adam gives him a look and nods, showing he's just as impressed.

"We're actually apart of the military." Sandra announces to us.
"Military?" My mum's eyebrows raise in surprise.
"Yes. Well, were to be honest..." she trails off.
"What happened? Well obviously this outbreak, apocalypse whatever you want to call it, might be the reason. But isn't the military still in place to protect what's left of the population." My dad questions them.
"The military.... has left this state. There's no military here."
