THEY WERE BACK IN THE CAR, Devon finally on the last page of her book. Rachel sat in the front seat looking out the window while Dick drove quietly, lost in his thoughts.
Devon closed her book with a sigh, not happy with the ending they gave to the protagonist. She leaned back and looked out the window to the passing trees.
"The man that came after you was apparently part of a doomsday cult." Dick cut the silence making Rachel look at him, Devon kept her eyes outside but her ears open, "They believe it's their destiny to prevent the end of the world."
"People are crazy." Devon chimed in from the back seat, making a smile crack on Rachel's face. "You think?"
"We're getting off course." Rachel twisted in her seat to catch a glimpse of Devon, seeing her holding in her laugh widened her smile to a full-on grin. "Does what I said mean anything to you?" That made all traces of laughter disappear from the girls' faces.
"When I was a kid I didn't get mad or scared... because bad things happened." Rachels's reply made Devon's eyes soften. They met at the age of nine in school, right after Devon defended Rachel from a kid who took a blue crayon from her. Was sticking a pencil in the kid's hand a bit extreme? Yes. What is it worth it? Absolutely. She knows of Rachel's... episodes, if you could call them that. But she never judged her, she understood what she was going through.
"What kind of bad things?" Dick turned his head to look at Rachel, still trying to keep his eyes on the road, but she didn't answer.
"I guess I'm an orphan too, now." Rachel glanced out the window, changing positions with Devon who now looked forward to the road. "We all are. Ha!" No one laughed. "Tough crowd? I'll get you both later." She shrugged and leaned her head back closing her eyes.
"Bruce Wayne, the billionaire, he raised you?" Rachel spoke again, Devon's eyebrows raising, this she wanted to know about. "Yeah...It's complicated."
"Does it ever go away?" Rachel was looking at Dick now, really looking. "What?" He kept his eyes ahead. "The feeling you got left behind."
Devon had a deep connection to this. She grew up without her parents, who had left her when she was just a toddler, leaving only their last name. She struggled to understand her abilities with no one to guide her. The first ten years of her life were spent moving between foster homes, never staying long as the families were afraid of her. She always felt abandoned and truly alone.
"Not entirely, no."
"You're gonna leave me too, right?" Rachel's voice cracked slightly, making Devon's heart ache. To this Dick hesitated, both girls noticed. "No. In not gonna do that."
Devon drifted off to a dreamless sleep, her body heavy with dread of what was to come.
