« I am your Queen ! » I said, taking a supposedly powerful pose more ridiculous than anything else. The public, composed of sick and poor children accompanied by their parents, laughed at this scene, a normal reaction that ironically felt bitter to me.
After this performance as a volunteer that I had to prepare for weeks, I went to the school of the village to help with simple chores.
I loved helping others, especially my beloved brothers and sisters of the village. I knew everyone and everything about them, I wanted to be part of their life, to be their support.
Since our village fell under poverty and hunger after the succession of great wars, as one of the oldest kids there, I felt a sense of responsibility towards my people. Thus, I decided to protect every inhabitant of Nellam to the best of my capacities.
At the end of the day, I came back home to my mother Inaya. I was always proud of her, she was the most beautiful and brave woman I knew and she is the one who taught me to become who I am, who taught me to always think about others before myself. With her old and wise green eyes, her long black hair always braided on the side and her gracious body, she became a model for me and her patients. Her healing abilities were the greatest, which made her the most famous doctor of the country. Back then when I was still a kid, I saw her actions as a healer durong the wars and secretly dreamed to myself that my mother was a magician who took the pain away with her, I even innocently thought that maybe she had a hidden jar full of pain. I felt the corners of my mouth slightly going upwards at the memory.
But my mother also had a calm nature needed to become a doctor, a quality that was unknown to me. People sometimes called me « the fierce fire of the village », I had to move, talk, discover my surroundings, intervene in fights and even fight sometimes. But one thing we have in common is our will to be free. We could kill to get our liberty or to free others.
At the house, I gladly found Ray my childhood friend and eternal rival sitting on my bed. We once decided to become warriors together and fight to defend our people, that was a childish dream that gave us power to get through each day. He always followed me everywhere, he once told me he’d even follow me to hell, a thought that I rapidly got rid of in my mind.
« Shai are you okay ? » he asked as I stared in the void of my mind, I nodded firmly not to worry him. But I was worried, I had a strange persisting and anxious feeling for weeks now. I tried to know its nature but I still had no idea. As the feeling grows stronger, I feel weaker and the only thing I can sadly do is practice my swordsmanship. I trained to fight with a sword, as well as with my physical power alongside Ray my whole life to prepare for a potential tragic event in the unstable atmosphere of the country.
Ray was like a ray of sun in my life, always reminding me I am not alone in this cruel world. His golden skin reflected the light, but this was nuanced by his dark blue eyes strengthening his gentle stare and his black mid lenght hair were always held in a bun letting little pieces of hair falling on his eyes. He was extremely popular among girls and in most events it amused me to see him avoid each try to discuss with him. He was desperately looking for my help that never came for the situation made me laugh, and I needed it. I also prefered to stay alone but, in my case it was easy as my well known strength was not appreciated by men. My body was also considered too muscled, or too ‘rough’ for a supposedly weak girl. Yet, I did get complimented for my beauty which from my point of view was not extraordinary compared to others. I had long wavy browny red hair, a light skin spotted by tiny freckles and my eyes were of a dirty browny green topped by strong eyebrows. People told me I belonged to the forest considering my looks that ressembled those of hunters… I actually never disagreed with these people as I loved the forest as much as my village, the fresh scent of nature and the sound of birds so specific to the wild forest, were so appeasing to me.
I was sitting alone in my room thinking about my day when I heard fierce footsteps along with my name
« - Shai ! Guess what !? It was my mother and Ray, they seemed pretty excited which was unusual.
- What ? Tell me what makes you both so excited ? I actually did not really care but they were happy so I got along with their mood.
- We are all invited to the palace in exactly one month from now ! Mother was especially excited and I understood her. A personal invite coming from the King himself it was unusual and I could never say it out loud but… suspicious.
- What is the occasion ?
- It’s a ball to celebrate the day of brotherhood, it said on the paper that every noble is invited. » This time Ray talked, he had never shown that much excitement apart from our training time, it seemed to be important for him
« - If you are happy then I am too. »I said throwing them a gentle stare
