I walked down the stairs slowly and walked into the sitting room.

"Thanks for the card Charlie. It was really nice." I smiled weakly. I walked over to the fire place and sat down beside it. Everyone was having their own conversations so they wouldn't notice me throwing something in the fire.

I took the piece of paper out from under the strap of my bra and put it into the fire quickly. I watched as the flames engulfed the paper.

"Aren't we going to Grandma's for the weekend?" Avery asked. She didn't look up from her phone as she asked her question. She didn’t seem interested about going to Grandma’s. Who would when you had to drive four hours to her house?

Don't get me wrong. I love Grandma but she lives really far away and if we don't come up to visit her she gives out.

"Yes, we are." Mom told Avery before turning back to Charlie.

"Maddie and I were supposed to have a girls weekend though." Charlie frowned.

"I don't want to miss that!" I said suddenly. Girls weekends were the best with Charlie.

"Why doesn't Maddie stay with me for the weekend? I haven't seen her in ages. We need to catch up." Charlie suggested. Mom bit her bottom lip in thought and then turned around to face me.

"Grandma hasn't seen you in ages." She told me.

"I'll go and visit her next weekend." I told her. I could see her thinking for a moment until she nodded her head.

"Isn't your apartment is being painted? It's going to smell all weekend." Cameron asked.

"Why don't we have it here?" I smiled. I knew what Charlie was doing. She was trying to get everyone away so I could see what was in the mysterious box.

"I don't mind. No parties or boys though."

"Mom, they're having a girls weekend, why would there be boys?" Avery asked.

"Don't be smart Avery." Mom snapped. Avery picked up her phone and walked out of the living room.

"Well, I better be off." Charlie announced. The tension in the room was getting to her. She hated seeing us all fighting.

"Can't you stay a little longer?" Cameron asked her. She stood up and picked her bag off the floor.

"I'm going to my parents tonight. It's my niece's birthday." Charlie smiled while looking at me.

"I didn't know you had a niece." Mom questioned. Charlie turned around to face Mom.

"Yes, she's the same age as Maddie. She even shares the same birthday." She told Mom.

"Isn't that weird? We must meet her someday. Where does she live?" Mom asked.

"She lives in Paris with her Mother, my sister. She's over here for a visit." Charlie gave Cameron a kiss on the cheek and then continued. "I must get going; I don't want to be late for dinner. Happy Birthday Maddie, I'll see you tomorrow."

"I think I'll go to bed, I'm really tired. I’ll walk out with you Charlie." I yawned. I got up off the black sofa and walked out the door.

"Goodnight sweetheart." Mom answered.

"Night, Maddie." Aubrey and Cameron said in-sync. Charlie and I walked out of the warm living room and into the dark hallway. I opened the door and Charlie pulled me in for a hug.

“Don’t come over tomorrow.” I whispered into her ear.

“Wasn’t planning on it.” With that, she was gone. I watched as her car pulled away into the night.

What was in the box?

And how did it affect me?
