First: a perfect circle. The lines have to be steady, even, and the radius must be equal all around. On the north side I draw the symbol for disassembly, surrounded by the glyph for organic decomposition, leaving only the bare metal elements behind. To the south I draw the symbol for metallic coagulation, linked to the glyphs of mercury and silver to the west and south. Fire, water, and balanced earth must follow.

In the center of the formed glyph I add my ingredients: a swallow’s beak, the tongue of a chimera, and fine grains of pure silver. Amid the ingredients I add a small cup of water.

Completed, I traced my finger along the borders of the glyph to seal and activate it. A soft glow generates from the lines and I observe, looking for any sign of error.

Satisfied with what I prepared, I laid my head back against a rock and waited. Alchemy took time and this particular concoction would take all night. With nothing better to do, I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
