in her youth, marjorie hastings adored fredbear's family diner. at the ripe age of seven years old, she was exposed to the songs and dances of the lovable characters fredbear and bonnie. given the time of their creation, they were made with obvious love. stitches exposed at their seams and the undeniable squeal of rusted joints as the characters would perform on stage during meals. she was sure she had never eaten more pizza in her life than during the months that the diner was in business. her, and her brother gerald -- an unfortunate family name he ended up with, would beg and plead with their parents each and every night to be in attendance for the dinner show. it was a treat, however. preserved for saturday nights and if they were well behaved during the school week. her parents were familiar with the owner -- an inspired man named william afton, who had some fancy one bear show for quite some time only to introduce the beloved bunny that would accompany him. they would speak with the man in passings, marjorie had heard her father congratulating him on the success of fredbear's. he had always given marjorie the heebie jeebies, however. so, she'd stay far, preferring to be closer to the characters. her favorite was the bunny, gerald greatly preferred fredbear, but bonnie held marjorie's heart.
everything had been great at the diner; the tradition is one that the hastings family held close for many months. that was until 1983. it was early spring -- or was it early summer? it was all a blur now, and she couldn't quite remember, all she recalled was watching a taller boy clutching a young boy -- she knew him to be evan afton, he was around her age at the time, and he'd often accompany her and gerald to play a game or two. what had happened was heinous. his older brother bringing him far too close to fredbear's fuzzy frame. "momma, what is he doing?" marjorie had questioned her mom, nudging the woman who snapped her head in the direction of the afton boys. the diner was filled with the sound of shouts and pleas - evan begging to be released while his brother, what was his name? martin? marvin? simply laughed at the antics, his friends joining in with boisterous guffaws. anyone with a brain watched in fear as evan's head was pushed closer to fredbear's mouth.
"lawrence, do something," her mother shot towards her father, nodding towards the boys who were playing far too rough. just as her father stood up, moving to push through the forming crowds -- a sickening crunch bounced off the walls of the diner. where there was once wails of fear that plagued their sensitive ears, there was now a deathly silence. "oh, good lord," her mother exhaled, reaching around to cover marjorie's eyes. "cover gerald's eyes, larry!" a sudden change of heart, and lawrence scrambled to do as he was told, large palm covering the wide eyes of gerald who had seen everything happen right before his observant gaze.
"what happened?" marjorie asked, attempting to peel her mother's hand from her eyes. "ger, what happened?"
"fredbear just bit evan's head off!" he exclaimed; his statement only confirmed by the sudden realization dawning upon everyone in the room. the sound of chairs squawking against tiled floors as parents rushed to grab their kids to protect their innocence from the sight unfolding. the howling laughter was muted, and it seemed no one wanted to get in the path of william afton as he emerged from the back room.
marjorie didn't remember much else from the day. the following week, in the paper, it was announced that fredbear's family diner would be closing due to unseen circumstances. however, anyone that was there that day knew the reality of the situation. evan afton had died that day, in the jaw of his own father's creation at his brother's hand. this was only the start to the afton's bad luck, and unfortunately, the hastings family seemed to have a front seat to it all.
when freddy fazbear's pizza was announced, patricia hastings was hesitant to allow her children to attend their opening day. by now, marjorie was eleven, and gerald was thirteen. they still prompted questions about evan, about michael, about the afton's as a whole. it was difficult to explain, and really, she hated to delve into it. it was a tragedy, and something she wished they never had to see.
