lover (introduction);
maddy perez loves eros jung in secret; maybe they weren't spun in perfect little fairy tails or written in the stars but they were each other's own imperfect harmony, just a millisecond apart from the other yet captivatingly intertwined forever. he was her first, her first awkward encounter, her first hummingbird murmuring heartbeat, her first dance partner in the hallway of freshman year's homecoming dance (two beings so intrinsically intertwined that they almost seemed to fuse together) and in turn she was his.
his first trembling succession of heartbeats, his first kiss in an empty hallway with her hands intertwined at his nape and her feet atop his own; everything of his quickly becomes everything of hers.
no one would believe it because eros jung is nothing like his name; midnight black hair spun delicately atop his head, enchanting brown eyes a deep mahogany and the softest murmur of aphrodite against every withheld smile rarely shared; as if the greeks themselves had crafted him one frenzied morning eons ago, only to forget to give him life until one cold day in 2001 when yujin jung gave birth. but there was a crack against the finely crafted features, a reminder that there's nothing perfect about eros.
the greeks may have crafted him but the heavens would never allow perfection in mortality—eros was an imperfection in the guise of perfection and everyone knew it. he was standoff-ish, and almost never smiled or spoke unless it was absolutely necessary. spent most of his days in the one art room East Highland High School offered and refused to socialize (smart too, far too smart for whatever a shitty town could offer him). so of course no one would see the infatuation maddy could hold for him no matter how perfect his features were he would never be perfect and wasn't that what maddy wanted? perfectness?
(everyone but herself, she thought high as a kite, rue had a way of knowing things most didn't—people always liked to tell her things she doesn't think they should be saying to anyone, but then again, it wasn't like rue was going to open her mouth and tell anyone about the things maddy would murmur about eros)
but then eros jung was pulled out of school and taken back to his home country (a family emergency) in the middle of sophomore year and not even maddy knew if he'd ever come back, after all, why would anyone come back to East Highland? and so she scrambled to erase all her firsts with eros jung, would grab nate jacobs cold hands and tell him he was all her firsts and behind his back she'd try to convince herself that holding his hand and giving him her heart was what she wanted.
nate jacobs didn't listen to her every word with attentive and gentle hands, he didn't wait for her to finish speaking before letting her know whatever he was thinking. he didn't let her step on his feet while they swayed to music that would never play. he didn't kiss her softly in the art studio with charcoal-coated fingertips and paint-stained skin—his kisses are bruising and dominant, he doesn't wait for her to catch her breath rather he steals it and bottles it selfishly for himself; telling herself to love nate jacobs instead of eros jung is like telling a star to just vanish quietly into the galaxy after it dies.
no, maddy could never forget eros but nate didn't have to know that—no one did (except rue, of course).
but shit, rue thinks, who would have thought that eros jung would actually come back to East Highland?
