CHAPTER 5
"HELP ME!"

[real life]

melina ended up staying over at the triplets' house after dropping izzy and madi off around 10 p.m. of course, matt had to drive melina back and forth to his house because she needed to drop off avi with her parents.

she let them know she was staying at nick's house, and they happily agreed, expressing their gratitude to matt for bringing their daughters home safely. before they could say anything else, melina quickly said her goodbyes.

the next morning was the first day of senior year, and matt was not thrilled at all. he felt anxious about his classes and annoyed at the thought of having to drive everyone around for school.

at 7:15 a.m., matt barged into nick's room and flipped on the lights. melina and nick were sound asleep. matt grabbed a pillow and playfully hit them both.

melina groaned but didn't fully wake up; she just turned over to get comfortable again. matt rolled his eyes and glanced at nick, who was still sleeping like a rock.

"get up! we have to go soon." matt yawned, but neither of them reacted. he reached over and pinched nick's leg until he finally stirred awake.

nick mumbled in his sleep before bolting upright at the pain in his leg. he groaned and squinted at the bright light. "matt, get out!" he grumbled, trying to pull the covers over himself but groaning again when he found them missing. of course, matt had already yanked them off.

"no, get up. we have school and i'm not waiting on her to wake up, she can take an uber for all i care." matt insisted, opening the blinds wide.

"do you have to be such an asshole so early in the morning?" nick yawns then glanced over at melina, who was still fast asleep, her blanket slipping off the bed. only a pillow lay beneath her for warmth. matt doesn't reply to nick instead he just leaves the room and shuts the door behind him.

"mel, get up." nicks said, shaking her lightly, but she didn't budge. remembering that she was a deep sleeper, he gave up. nick got out of bed, letting her sleep a little longer.

in their defense, they had gone to bed at 3 a.m. after being forced to sleep by marylou, who had heard them laughing over a movie while she went to the bathroom.

chris had joined them at some point, watching the movie until he claimed he was getting a pillow from his room and never returned.

finally, five minutes later melina was awake. after opening her eyes to matt hitting her with a pillow, and repeatedly saying, "get up."

melina sat on a counter stool, eating cereal and already dressed for the day. she treated marylou and she looked down at her backpack and smiled lightly.

the first day of school (and week) had always been her favorite because there was no homework, just a syllabus to read through.

as she reflected on the past three years, she shook her head. so much had happened, yet nothing had really changed. she hoped this year would bring something new.

that thought lingered until she heard commotion from upstairs, chris and matt were scattering around, getting their things.

after washing her dishes, melina went into the living room and waited on the couch. the silence made her feel sleepy again, and she shut her eyes, feeling relaxed until matt came downstairs and yelled, "chris! hurry up!"

melina opened her eyes again and looked over at him. "do you have to be so loud? it's seven in the morning." instead of replying, matt walked toward the front door and grabbed his keys from the key holder.

"be in the car in five seconds or you're stranded." he said, leaving the door open and letting the breeze from outside flow into the house.

nick walked out of his room, throwing his backpack on the couch. "it's too early!" he whined, putting on his hoodie. melina yawned, nodding, and grabbed her things, walking out of the house.

melina slid into the middle of the backseat of the car, leaving three seats open behind her. nick climbed in next to her and sighed. "turn on the heater; it's cold." he said to matt, who ignored him.

chris grabbed the aux cord and plugged in his phone. melina tapped chris on the shoulder and said, "play mac miller." he gave her a thumbs-up, too lazy to respond. without looking up from his phone, matt unplugged the aux cord.

chris stared at him and reached over to plug it back in. just as before, matt unplugged it again, remaining silent. "just leave it! why are you—" chris groaned, reaching over again. this time, matt grabbed the aux from both ends and threw it to the back seat. "no! chris! you're being fucking annoying." he snapped. melina snorted, "damn, who peed in your cereal?" matt shot her the finger.

chris rolled his eyes at matt and reached behind the seat, trying to grab the aux. nick sighed, trying to push chris back toward the front. "get away!" chris slapped his hand away in return. "shut up, stupid!"

melina moved to the other seat, scrolling through instagram on her phone. she ignored them, not wanting to get involved in their random arguments.

"you seriously can't go twenty minutes without playing music, chris?" matt said in disbelief, waiting for chris to sit back down. "matt, turn on the heater!" nick yelled, looking annoyed. matt sighed and turned on the ac. "i heard you the first time, nick! shut up," he snapped. nick sighed dramatically, "if you heard me, you would've done it when I asked the first time! chris, stop!"

melina rolled her eyes, hoping matt would just start the car and drive already. "guys—" but they were too wrapped up in their own bubble to hear her. just as she had hoped, marylou walked out of the house, carrying trevor.

melina leaned into the window and mouthed, "help me." marylou looked at her with concern and walked over to chris's window, knocking on it. seeing their mom outside made the boys go silent.

"what's going on? why aren't you at school yet?" she asked. the moment she did, melina's hopes of getting to school on time plummeted, as the boys immediately started talking over each other again.

the first day of senior year was off to an interesting start.
