The Unbelievable Gift

"Happy Birthday to you...Happy Birthday to you..." It was midnight, Parag satupright as he heard this chorus. His eyes opened wide seeing his family with acandle lit cake and a cane basket covered with velvet cloth. He had turned eighteenand his family was more excited than he was.

"Come on Parag bhaiya, blow the candle and ask for a wish," said hisyounger brother Neel, pushing the cake in front of him. Parag quickly blew thecandle and cut the cake in four pieces. "Happy Birthday beta," said his mother Mrs. Bapodra lovingly, as she ate the piece of cake offered by her son. Parag went to his dad, "Dad this one isfor you". "My son is an adult now," said Parag's dad Mr. Bapodra proudly, as he took the piece of cake from him.

"And now it is time for the gift!" said Neel, in a mischievous tone.

He pushed the cane basket in front of Parag. As Parag lifted it, he saw two black eyes peeping from the velvet cloth. "A pet dog! Thanks guys," exclaimed Parag. In a moment's time, the puppystarted licking Parag's cheeks. "What will you name him Parag bhaiya?"

"Snowy," said Parag seeing the puppy's snow-white colour. Soon Snowy and Parag became fond of each other. When Parag would return from his college, Snowy would rush towards him wagging his tail. At night, they would go for walks together.

Snowy was an exceptionally smart and affectionate dog. One late night, Parag wasanxiously completing his college assignments that were due next day.Snowy could sense Parag's anxiety and accompanied him all night. The dog's presence comforted Parag who completed his assignments at 4:00 am after which they both dozed off. 

When Parag woke up, it was already eight in the morning. "Oh no! I am late. I was supposed to reach college by eight thirty," exclaimed Parag nervously looking at his wall clock. "Mom, is the breakfast ready?" he shouted looking towards the kitchen.

He hurriedly picked up his towel, rushed to the bathroom and was out within a few minutes. He then dashed to the kitchen, grabbed two parathas, rolled them and started stuffingthem in his mouth. "Parag, beta... don't eat food so hastily, you can catch a cab to college," saidhis mom worriedly.

Parag quickly got up, picked his bag and ran out saying, "Mom even if I catch a cab, I doubt if I will make it to college on time!" He reached college just when Professor Mathew was collecting the assignments. Seeing this he was relieved, but as he looked for his assignment in his bag, it was not there!

At home, Snowy went to Parag's room and recognized his master's copy of the completed assignment. He immediately picked it in his mouth and ran out of the house. He dashed throughthe streets and reached Parag's college. He entered the college gate, before thesecurity guard could stop him, he sniffed...
